Smoke Signals 3 JANUARY 1,2008 Tribal employees collect month's worth of food By Ron Karten Smoke Signals staff writer Rebellious weather failed to keep the sun from shining on the food bank at the Grand Ronde Com munity Resource Center. After an early fall when the cup boards were almost bare, the com munity, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Spirit Mountain Casino all stood up with significant contributions. For instance, the Tribal work force's food drive nearly doubled last year's donation. With bins accepting food all over the Tribal campus from Nov. 5 through Dec. 17, two fewer weeks than last year, Tribal employees nev ertheless brought in a combination of food and cash equivalent to 17,268 nonperishable items of food. Last year, Tribal employees donated the equivalent of 10,071 food items. The donation represents about a month of the food bank's annual needs, said Jolanda Catabay. Catabay, who works in the Health Clinic's business office, teamed with fellow staffer Melody Baker to start the employee food drive in 2005. This year, Catabay and Baker passed coordination of the annual project on to Genifer Grout, Shanna Eide, Shannon Simi and Angella McCallister. "What they have done is unbeliev able," Catabay said. The Grand Ronde Community Resource Center is serving more than 200 families this season. Uncounted among the numbers are a few week's worth of Elders' bake sales, shopping trips, large cash donations and people gener ally opening up their cupboards for the effort. Also uncounted are more than 200 casino employees, each given a Christmas ham by the casino who re-directed those hams to the local food bank. m m mmmm mm a$ nut1 A Grand Addition Yamhill County Transit Area, is pleased to welcome Grand Ronde to our service area. At YCTA, our mission is to provide convenient and efficient service to travelers throughout Yamhill County. Much of Grand Ronde is outside the YCTA area but the Grand Ronde Tribe receives transit funds from the State and is using them to extend this service to the public in the Grand Ronde community through a contract with YCTA. As a result, YCTA is making the following changes to our West Valley and Salem routes. Route changes beginning December 3: YCTA's Hwy 18 Link to the West Valley will be extended to Grand Ronde. Amity will now be served by our Salem Route and no longer be serviced by the West Valley Route. The Salem Route will no longer travel Hwy 221 through Dayton. Instead, the Salem Route will travel Hwy 99W South from McMinnville. Dayton passengers are encouraged to use YCTA's Highway 99W Link service.
