Board of Directors. There is one available board position open for a qualified individual (Tribal and non-Tribal members) that possess the appropriate business knowledge and experience. The SMGI board of directors is responsible to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Tribal Council and oversees fiscal account ability, budgets, policies, procedures, and business operations of Spirit Mountain Casino. The SMGI Board meets twice monthly and each board member receives a stipend each month for their participation. Qualifications should include general business knowledge, ex perience in hospitalitycustomer service driven environment, ten years of experience in a responsible business position, and strong financial experience. Knowledge of Native American owned and operated organizations preferred but not mandatory. There should also be a demonstrated ability to be responsive to the goals of the business and its increasing dynamic character with appropriate analytical and communication skills. Lillian Swanson Whitten September 21, 1909 June 24, 2007 Lillian Whitten, age 97, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2007. she was born in Astoria, Oregon, and raised on the Grays River in southwestern Washington. She was the eldest daughter of Litta and Theodore Swanson, and granddaughter of Lucia Johnson Neal, Rogue River Shasta. When Lillian was a child she went to school in Rosburg, Wa., by rowboat since there weren't any roads to their house at that time. When she was a young woman she worked at a salmon cannery in Altoona, near where grays River runs into the Columbia. She married Gene Whitten in Astoria in 1928. They were married for almost 73 years, until he passed away. They had 2 daughters, Sharon, who lives and works in Westport, Wa., and Beverly, who died in a car wreck in 1971, leaving two orphan daughters. Lil lian leaves 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. In her later years, Lillian continued to live in her own home ini Naselle, Washington, with the help of her only grandson, Tim. She was a strong, proud, and independent lady with an open mind and a quick sense of humor. Her family will miss her very much. Wanda Vanita Phillips Wanda Vanita Phillips, 88, died May 6, 2007, at her daughter's home in Brookings of natural causes. She was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Chehalis, Washington, to William Ira and Anna Eliza McElhose Bishop. She moved within the Northwest with her family several times dur ing her childhood. She married John Lewis Phillips April 4, 1936, in Vancouver, Wash ington. The couple made their first home together in Sheridan. They later moved to Roseburg where Mrs. Phillips owned a restau rant. In 1952, the couple relocated to Brookings where Mrs. Phillips was ac tive in Eastern Star, and served as a president of the Emblem Club. In the 1960s, she worked at the Dairy Queen and in the lily fields. Mrs. Phillips was a good seamstress and enjoyed making the clothes for her daughters and grandchildren. She liked to read and enjoyed playing many kinds of games, including the pinochle and canasta. She was a fun-loving person who lived life fully, and treasured her grand children, her family said. Survivors include daughters Alice Rush and husband Rod of Brook ings; Anna Hannan of Grand Ronde; grandchildren Jill Carrillo, Mitch Rush, Teresa Rice. Vanita Roland and Ken Phillips. Also surving are 10 great-grandchildren, including Vanita Carrillo and Stephanie Roland of Brookings; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband John; great-grandson Rivers Rush; three brothers and five sisters.
