Sheriffs Office Grand Ronde Substation When you get in your car, you expect to get from point A to point li without any problems. But the trouble with car problems is they are pretty unpredict able. As the Boy Scouts are so fond of saying "Be Prepared." It's always a good idea. First make sure you're car is in good working order before you start out. As recent events have shown, being prepared for car trouble before being stranded is a very good idea. It does not cost much and may save your life. Let's talk about what every motorist should have in their vehicle. 1. A waterproof container to hold emergency supplies; I recommend a large hard plastic box with a lid. 2. Road flares or some kind of reflective devices. Road flares can do double duty as a signal device and you can use them to start a fire. A working flashlight is another good addition. It's hard to change a tire or flag down someone to help when it's dark if you don't have one. Make sure you have fresh batteries in it and a spare set with you. 3. A space blanket, a thin, reflective, plastic ike blanket. The reflective quali ties will help keep body heat in if you get stuck in the cold. Some additional warm clothing is also a good idea. 4. Jumper cables for dead batteries. There are also specialty batteries that plug into your cigarette lighter and can be used to get your car started. 5. Extra fuses and light bulbs. Not having working taillights or headlights can cause a crash pretty quickly. 6. First aid kit with various size bandages, antibacterial cream and some type of pain reliever. Many stores sell prepared kits so you don't have to spend a lot of time making one yourself. 7. If you have a cell phone, make sure you have it charged up and or have a car charger in your vehicle. Another good addition is a membership in an auto club. If you are planning any kind of off-road trip or a trip to a remote area, you need to expand your kit. You should pack extra food and water. I suggest you pack M.R.E. packs. The M.R.E. stand for "Meals Ready to Eat". They have a long shelf-life and contain a lot of calories. They are not the tastiest food you will ever eat but work well in a pinch.' The most important item on a long or remote trip is not something you take with you, its something you do. Always let someone know where you are going and when you will arrive. Tell them you will call when you arrive. Let them know the route you will be taking. Those are the basics. You may discover other essential items depending on the length and type of trip you are taking. Enjoy your trip and be safe. Sgt. Nate Goldberg Dear Smoke Signals, The Eugene Satellite Office is one of the best things that ever happened to Tribal members outside the six-county service area. We are not entitled to the benefits that are given out in the six-county area, but what this of fice brings to the table is Tribal unity first and foremost. Tribal members get a chance to meet and get to know other Tribal members that live in that area. Also, in this area service is incredible for what they have to work with. They provide computer access, phone access and Elders are provided with lunch. They offer a safe haven to get advice from other Tribal members and they learn about Tribal functions that go on.
