Sports, Timber Industry, Tribal Council Make For A Good Life By Toby McClary Athletic ability, a lifetime of log ging and three terms on Tribal Council have made Tribal El der Leon "Chips" Tom an icon around Grand Ronde. Not to mention his face being plastered on billboards all across the state of Oregon. A HISTORY OF "CHIPS" Leon Clinton Tom was born to Michael Clinton Tom and Cora (Voutrin) Tom on July 15, 1928. He was born in Grand Ronde and spent much of his childhood there. He attended Grand Ronde Elementary, Willamina High School as well as Chemawa Indian School through differ ent periods of his child- hood. "I had a good childhood," said Tom. "What I mean is that I never experienced going hungry or any thing like that."
