Dear Editor, In the early 1970s my sister, Karleen Parazoo, led a group of protestors to the site which became the Trojan Nuclear Plant on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Karleen led the protest because the site was on a traditional Chinook (Tchinouk) Cathlamet village fishing site, which include an Indian burial ground. The protest was ignored; the Trojan Nuclear Plant facility operated for many years after 1976, and now it is a memory. The facility was built and operated by PGE of Portland, Oregon, owned by Enron. Ownership of that land is another issue. The facility was eventually shut down due to technical problems (1992) and the cooling tower is now destroyed (May 2006). Other cleanup will continue at the facility in the coming years. What happened to the artifacts and burials uprooted when the Trojan site was developed? Does PGE know or does anyone know? A few months ago Tribal Chair woman Cheryle Kennedy let the City of Portland know that Grand Ronde is interested in the cleanup of an industrial site in the city because we have ancestors tied to the land. Perhaps, we would also be interested in what happened at the Trojan Nuclear Plant facility site? Sincerely, Claudette Parazoo Tribal Elder 2923 PUBLICATIONS OFFICE 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, OR 97347 1 -800-422-0232, FAX: 503-879-2 1 73 www.grandronde.org DEADLINE PATE ISSUE DATE Thursday, July 20 AUGUST I Friday, August 4 AUGUST 1 5 Friday, August 18 SEPTEMBER I Tuesday, September 5 SEPTEMBER 1 5 BRENT MERRILL PUBLICATIONS COORDINATOR 503-879-2321 bimt.n)rrillgridrond.or TOBY MCCLARY PHOTOJOURNALIST 503-879-1 358 lobv.mccUrygrandrondf.org SHELLY KENT CENTRAL PHONES 503-879-52 1 1 sh4ly.kHgrjndrond.or JUSTIN PHILLIPS GRAPHIC DESIGNER 503-879-2190 IUStin.phlillpSgr2ndr0nde.org KRISTEN RAVIA SECRETARY 503-879-1 4S3 krblen.ravUirandronde.orf TERI MERGER CENTRAL PHONES 503-879-5211 Ctrl, merciergrandronde.org RON KARTEN STAFF WRITER 503-879-4663 ron.kartenjrandrortde.orf GEORGE VALDEZ PRODUCTION ASSISTANT 503-879-14 1 6 george.valdezgrandronde.org SMOKE SIGNALS, a publication of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Com munity of Oregon, is published twice a month.
