The Pictures Of Our Past, I feel I need to give everyone some background about the picture I donated to Spirit Mountain Casino and a little about its authenticity. The picture is of my grjandparents and uncle and was taken during a parade in Salem many years ago. It was removed from its hanging place at the casino a little while ago and I have been told that the reason for the removal was because an employee said it was offensive and not authentic. How much more authentic can a picture be that for it to be an original print from a documented event? Some history, my grandmother was Maude Warren Hudson, her father John Warren was a young boy, only seven years old when our people were made to walk up to Grand Ronde from southern Oregon valley during the middle of winter. Maude was a moccasin maker, basket weaver and she beaded. My Grandpa Abe was Chairman of Tribal Council in 1935 and 1936. He signed the constitution adopted at that time. My Uncle Ken Hudson served in the U.S. Navy and returned to this area after 20 years of service. My Grandpa Abe was a custodian at the State Capital for many years and became good friends with a lot of legislative people. Governor McKay, at the time he was governor, asked my grandpa if he, grandma and Uncle Ken would be in a parade in Salem. So, with that they had my grandma put the outfits together. The outfits were not any grand regalia like we often see today, just something grandpa put together. They were Grand Ronde and did not try to mimic the regalia of the Sioux and Cheyenne and other planes Tribes like so many do today. She saved her buckskin to make moccasins and beaded things and along with her baskets she would make, traded them or sold them for food or clothing for her family. Her baskets and bead works are probably still all over the Salem area to this day. So, for anyone to say the picture is offensive and not authentic is not accurate. All I can say is shame on them. The people in the picture are authentic, the clothing they wore is authentic, it was an authentic event and it is an authentic part of our history. Grandma Maude was also the sister to our Eldest Tribal member Nora Kimsey. These are some of our oldest Tribal families. Thank you to whoever put the picture back up at the casino. Everyone is please remember that the people from our past do not have to look like cigar-store Indians to have to be in authentic Native dress or to have made an authentic picture. Taking the picture down hurt some, but for anyone to say it was not authentic was offensive to our ancestors and to me. A very proud granddaughter of Maude Warren Hudson and Abe Hudson.
