JUNE 1,2006 Smoke Signals 13 - Leonard Charles Vivette February 16, 1913 May 11, 2006 Tribal Elder Leonard Vivette passed away in his home in Grand Ronde on May 1 1, 2006. He was 93. He was born in St. Paul, Oregon on February 16, 1913 to Louis and Lena Mary (Goodell) Vivette. Leonard grew up in Grand Ronde and attended Chemewa Indian School. He married Margaret Hoptowit on October 5, 1934. Together, they raised 7 children in the Yakama Valley. Leonard worked in agri culture until his retirement in 1978. In recent years he moved to Grand Ronde and lived at Elder's housing until his death. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in White Swan, Wash ington and recently a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Ronde. Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He loved the Oregon Coast where he gathered mussels. He attended pow-wows, listened to tapes of pow-wow drums and played at Indian casinos in Oregon and Washington. He loved to dance, listen to songs of the 50's and met Willie Nelson in person, one of his favorites. Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, one daughter Connie (Colette) Vivette in 1957, his son Lance Corporal Leon Vivette was killed in action in Vietnam July 6, 1967, and his son Charles Leonard Vivette lost his battle with cancer in 2003; one grandson R. Scott Galligher in 1989, grandson-in-law Mark Cook to cancer in 1999 and his son-in-law Marvin Hoff in 2004 to cancer. Leonard is survived by four daughters; Yvonne Smith of Wapato, Wash ington, Leonette Galligher of Grand Ronde, Oregon, Floriene Hoff of Bea verton, Oregon and Emmy Vivette of Wapato; sons-in-law Red Smith and Richard Galligher and daughter-in-law Lorna Vivette; 21 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, several nephews, nieces and cousins. Gary Rodrick LaChance, Sr. August 12, 1947 May 10, 2006 Tribal Elder Gary LaChance, Sr., 58, of Grand Ronde, passed away May 10 at the Life Care Center in McMinnville. He was born August 12, 1947 in Portland. He grew up in Astoria, Warrenton and Port land. His first job was with his parent's cab company. He next worked at a meat market and then learned to drive trucks. He drove a log truck for many years. He married Linda L. Brock on April 17, 1967 in Vancouver, Washington. They had met on a blind date. He lived in Portland until 1980 and worked at D&M Wood Products. He also lived in Vernonia until buying a home in Grand Ronde in 1990. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and collecting model cars. Survivors include his wife, Linda of Grand Ronde; son Gary LaChance of Grand Ronde; daughters, Dawn LaChance of Grand Ronde, Linda La Chance II of Willamina and Michele Stamos of Gresham; brother, Thomas LaChance of Dayton; sisters, Sharon Beard of Dayton, Jeanne of Portland; and 13 grandchildren. "M , - i 'V - rv i km b. I Randall "Randy" Lee Butler May 23, 1951 May 7, 2006 Tribal Elder Randy Butler, 54, a resident of Salem passed away at the Salem Hospital on May 7, 2006. He was born in McMinnville on May 23, 1951 the son of Nathaniel and Lois Leno Butler. He grew up in Grand Ronde and graduated from Willamina High School in 1969. Randy logged in woods after high school and then served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He returned from the military and attended Chemeketa Com munity College and got an associate degree in psychology. He went on to graduate from Western Oregon State University with a BS in psychology. He worked for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Siletz as a drug and alcohol counselor. He retired because of a disability. Randy has lived in Salem for the past 20 years. He married "Margie" Marjorie Diana Zink on October 28, 1988 in Salem. He was a member of the Salem Wrestling Association and refereed for many wrestling matches. He also umpired for softball and enjoyed playing basketball. Randy and his two brothers all wrestled at the state wrestling tournament during their high school years. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed the sports channel and cutting wood. He is survived by his wife Margie of Salem, daughters Tracy Butler of Portland and Teresa Butler of Salem, sons Randy Jr. of Washington and Christopher of Salem, grandchildren Allen, Carley, Justin, Cody, Jamison, Adriana and Nathan, brothers Alton of Sheridan, Gary, Alvin and Josh all of Grand Ronde along with several nieces and nephews. a: ij i . . i 1 -&-J Joseph R. Vicenzi January 1, 1931 May 7, 2006 Tribal Elder Joseph Vicenzi passed away in his home on Thursday, May 4, 2006 after an extended battle with bone cancer. He was 75. Born in Salem on January 1, 1931, he grew up primarily in Eugene. He was the son of Joseph Dominic and Edna Belle (Ty ler) Vicenzi. At the age of 2, his mother left the family. This resulted in his older sister going to live with a foster family while he stayed with his father. When Joseph was 3, he was stricken with polio. Due to this illness, he spent the next seven years in the Shriner's Hospital in Portland. His father visited him every weekend. Though handicapped, his father was determined not to allow this difficulty to interfere with his son's education or work experience. Thanks to his tenacity, Joseph became a professional driver. After a brief failed first marriage at the age of 28, he met and later married Linda Marie Maughan on May 23, 1966. The couple had two children, adding to his wife's two sons from a previous marriage. The couple later divorced in 1990. Joseph enjoyed deep-sea fishing, bowling and playing Black Jack. He adored his grandchildren and participated fully in their lives. He had many long-term friends, one of whom he had been acquainted with for 70 years. "He will be missed by every member of his family and each of his friends," the family said. Joseph is survived by two sons, Joseph E. of Albany and David of Tacoma; daughter, Kim Storm of Sheridan; brother, John of Eugene; two sisters, Margaret Ream of Lorraine and Lillian Whitehead of Albany; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his sister, Beatrice Patterson. Terry Lynn Berkey March 22, 1965 May 19, 2006 Tribal member Terry Berkey passed away on Friday, May 19, 2006, in a work accident in Keizer at the age of 41. He was born in McMinnville, Oregon on March 22, 1965. He grew up in North Salem and graduated from Gervais High School in 1983. Terry is survived by his wife of 20 years, Shanon and his two children, David and Brandy. He is also survived by his parents Ralph and Patricia Berkey, two sisters; Laura Ragon and Kim Christoffer son, his grandmother Leona Wilson, and his mother-in-law Diana George. Terry was a member of a large extended family who will miss him dearly. Terry was a skilled and gifted mechanic who worked alongside his Dad at Broadway Garage. He was a wonderful father, husband, ador ing son and brother who was loved by his family and will be missed by them and his friends. Terry loved fishing and hunting and being in the outdoors. His favorite pastime was boating and he was happiest when he spent time in his boat with his family. He recently completed an extensive remodel of his home, doing much of the work himself. He was meticulous in everything he did and he worked hard to make his home just the way he wanted it to be. His other favorite pastimes were spending time with his nieces and nephews, working with them at the shop, teasing them and helping them to fish or spending time hunting with them. Burial was at the Tribal Cemetery. Edgar "Ed" Allen Powell January 9, 1945 May 10, 2006 Edgar Allen Powell, 61, of Cascadia passed away on May 10 in Labanon. He was born in Albany to frank and Ethyl Phillips Powell. Ed grew up in Grand Ronde, he later lived in the Salem and Dallas areas, Terrebonne and Cascadia. Ed enjoyed fishing, landscaping and stock car racing. He was preceded in death by his son, Roger and a sister, Mar lene. Survivors include his daughters, Ronda Carter of Salem, Rebecca Vogel of Monmouth and Deborah Powell of Salem; sister, Eleanor McGarrah of Redmond; and seven grandchildren.
