About Smoke signals. (Grand Ronde, Or.) 19??-current | View Entire Issue (Aug. 1, 2004)
10 AUGUST 1, 2004 Smoke Signals despite our differences. The enrollment issue awaits resolution and hope fully with the return of the surveys we can determine our efforts of the membership and move forward. The issue of open communication be tween Council and the membership is very important but will need more time and space than is allowed here. I will address that in my letter that is forthcoming. Other concerns I will cover will include diversification of revenue, Tribal mentorship and succession programs for the Casino and our Tribal Government, cultural programs, member benefits and the overall management of the Casino, which is vital to the continued success of our Tribe. I will look forward to meeting with you soon. Respectfully, Diana George- Roll 175 Dan Provost No statement turned in to make the deadline of Wednesday, July 15 at 5 p.m. :(.. Ed Larson '1, . : ' m : i Dear Tribal Members, Hi! My name is Ed Larsen; I am seeking a 5th term on Tribal Council. A lot of you know me for those of you that don't I would like to share some issues and con cerns about our tribe. I have been told that I am a good lis tener; I hope for now you will read this and listen to me. I have been on Tribal Council almost 12 years. I have seen many things happen, a lot of them good some not so good. Now more than ever we need to try harder to come together as a tribe. Although we are recognized federally as a government we are still a tribe and family. Most of us are related. We need to try to come together and get along, united. Listed below are some of the accomplishments that we have had in no special order. Home down payment grants regardless of place of resident B Health Insurance program for all tribal members Elder and disability pension plan Built the Tribal health clinic Casino Completion of the tribal education complex and gymnasium Completion of three housing projects Set-up per capita plan for casino revenues Burial Assistance Plan One of the very few Tribal Casino that earned the ability to Self Regulation Set up Endowments for various programs As the Tribe has grown we are now looking at satellite offices for other areas. Our first one will be in the Portland Area, with the plan to open the next in the Eugene area. Several of the ideas above came from you as members that attend the town hall community meetings. These meetings began shortly after I was elected in 1992. I have learned a lot from you folks at these meet ings. Tribal Council has used the data gathered at these meetings for priority planning and strategic planning. I am proud and honored to have been part of all this. Projects I currently am working on listed below. Safety and Disaster Plan for the community, this is joint project with Tribe, Polk and Yamill County. Assisted living facility for our tribal elders. Widening of the Grand Ronde road part of safety plan. Working with adjoining counties Polk and Yamhill , and ODOT in making every effort in making our roads as safe as possible I believe that one of our biggest problems is misinformation going out to the tribal members. This is being sent out by people whom I would like to think mean well, although it causes a lot of confusion and mis trust. These people are not the government, Tribal Council is. Tribal Council has a duty to help all the membership regardless where they live. This is very difficult at times, because of the member's location. We can't serve our people out of this area as well as we can our local service area. However here are some of the programs that are avail able regardless of where you are living. Down Payment Grant Health Care Burial Assistance Per Capita 0 Education Scholarships In closing I would like to say I am very proud of our Tribe and it is an honor to be a part of the accomplishments. It is an honor to serve you and I look forward to doing so again. I am asking for your vote in this year's election.
