2 MAY 15, 2004 Smoke Signals mm Dear Smoke Signals, We would like to thank everyone for the support, prayers and comfort during the passing of our fa ther. Orville A. Leno (OB), born January 9, 1919 April 10, 2004, survived by Darlene Aaron McMinnville, Reyn Leno Willamina, Lonnie Leno Grand Ronde, Barbara Steere Willamina, Marty Leno Sheridan, 11 grand children and 13 great grand children. Brothers: Bud Leno ElMonte, California, Russ Leno Grand Ronde. Sister: Margaret Peters Lebanon. He spent four weeks in the hospital and we were able to bring him home so he could go in peace. There are so many friends, relatives and co-workers that were there for all, from the beginning to the end and are still there with supporting words or just looking out for all of us. We just can't re member everyone without mistakenly leaving someone out. So, please take this as a very big heart filled "Thank You" to each and everyone, for all your help and support. Thanks again from all of us, "The Orville Leno Family" Dear Smoke Signals, We would like to thank family, friends and neighbors for helping us cel ebrate our 37th Anniversary on April 17, 2004. It was a time of great joy and happiness. We saw family we hadn't seen in years. Families that have young children and they don't get to go many places. We felt very honored that so many people were here and spent their time with us. We received so many gifts that we never expected, but were gratefully thank ful for. Our love to all, Gary (Roll 361) & Linda LaChance Dear Tribal members and friends, It is my pleasure and honor to tell you about a man who works at Spirit Mountain Casino. I recently presented this man with an eagle feather, for his many accomplishments, but also for what I'm about to tell you. He is the manager of the Security Department. His name is Bruce Lattin. What makes Bruce different and what brings me such pride in him is that Bruce insists that anyone who is going to be a part of his supervisory team or management, better have knowledge of the Tribe, of Tribal govern ment and the history of the Tribe. Bruce believes that if you are going to work at the casino, at least in his department, you need to know who you're working for. When a supervisory position opens up, everyone scrambles to learn as much about the Tribe as they can, facts of termination, Restoration, Tribal Council names, board members, how many Tribes and what the names are. If they're not selected for the position, well, at least he got them to gather and remember the information about the Tribe. I am proud and honored to know Bruce Lattin. As one Tribal member to another, I'd encourage you to acknowledge him the next time you see him, to thank him for carrying on our history and being a positive and proud representative of Spirit Mountain Casino and The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Thank you Bruce, Joann Mercier Roll 546 Dear Editor, We revere out ancestors and remember them with respect and grati tude. My descendents end with my grandchild. Her children are no longer of my line... so decreed by ....whom???? Blood quantum was used by the federal government only to insure that there would be an end to this nonsense of Indians owning land and gov erning themselves. Because we have used their "control method" of decid ing on our descendants, we have succeeded, in these few generations, to make ourselves extinct. The plan has come full circle. Our Indian peoples have successfully become assimilated, and there..was the plan. Last of my line, Charlene Freeman Roll 194 Dear Smoke Signals, I am writing to express my gratitude for the invitation I received from Pat Allen to attend the Ceremonial Potlatch. I received a special gift at that event. I appreciate the committee and everyone who worked to make this possible. The songs and the unity fed my spirit. The acknowledgment of those who have passed and the griev ing of the ones left was such a gift and a blessing to lighten my spirit. Respectfully, Lisa Brown Granddaughter of Marge Lane-Martin (Macanotin-Tututini) Grandfather Henry Picard (Shasta-Modoc-Pit River) PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, OR 97347 1-800-422-0232 FAX: 503-879-2173 www.grandronde.org fwti V j f ' ' i 0 BRENT MERRILL PUBLIC INFORMATION MANAGEREDITOR 503-879-2321 brem.menillgrandronde.ori JUSTIN PHILLIPS GRAPHIC DESIGNER 503-879-2190 lustin.phllllpsgrandronde.org PEAPmrePflTE ISSUE PATE Fri.,May.21 JON. 1 Fri.,Jun. 4 TUN.
