Grand Ronde Hosts Traditional Name-Giving Ceremony Tribe's first brings home another piece of ancient culture. By Ron Karten It was the first name-giving cer emony that anybody could remem ber happening in Grand Ronde. Tribal member James Holmes, long known around the family as 'Rab bit,' was at last given an In dian name We-la-lik in the Wasco toneue and Wa-la-lik in im the Sahaptin tongue each a variation on the Indian word for "rabbit." Wasco and Sahaptin are bands of today's Warm Springs Confederation. The former Larry Dick, member of the Wasco Band of Warm Springs Indians, now exclusively using his In dian given name, Taaw 1 e e - w i n c h , meaning 'life' led the cer emony. He is "spiritual, cul tural, tradi tional leader of the Wasco," he said. He learned his craft from Chief Nelson Wallulatum, also of the Wasco Band.
