10 OCTOBER 15, 2003 Smoke Signals David "Crockett" Billings March 8, 1951 September 19, 2003 Crockett Billings of Willamina passed away on September 19. He was 52. He was born to Elvin and Fern Butler Billings in Fresno, California. He enlisted in the army in 1971 then returned home to Fresno. He came to the Dallas-Willamina area about 20 years ago and worked in the logging industry and in construction. He enjoyed playing pool, horseback riding, his motorcycle and spend ing time with his children, family and friends. Survivors include his lifemate, Jeanne "Ode" Antonucci of Scio; sons, Dustin Billings of Grand Ronde and Nathan Billings of Scio; daugh ter, Dana Maldonado of New York; stepdaughters, Amy Bice and Dawn Bowman, both of Turner; brother Alvin Billings of Willamina. Services were held on September 26 at the Tribal Cemetery. A Special Note: We would like to take time go give a special thanks to Jan D. Reibach for the service he performed for our beloved Brother, Dad, Grandpa and great friend who we lost. Another special thanks to Jan Reibach Jr. for playing the flute at the service. It touched our hearts very much during our loss. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for what you did for us in our time of sorrow. There really isn't enough words, but we thank you very much. The 4,540 square foot Station will house a Taco Time restaurant, a TCBY frozen yogurt outlet and an espresso bar featuring Boyd's coffee. The Station will have interior booth seating and drive through service. The Station's 12 gas pumps will dispense both diesel and un leaded gasoline from the two 20,000 gallon underground tanks. There will be pro pane service and a drive through car wash as well. The Station's exterior will match and complement the nearby Spirit Mountain Casino. Why: The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Natural Resources Division, in cooperation with Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife and USDA Veteri nary Services, is collecting biological samples from deer and elk to learn more about diseases that may be affecting our deer and elk herds. Deer Hair Loss Syndrome is already present in the Grand Ronde area. Samples may help determine the cause and method of spread of deer hair loss syndrome. Chronic Wasting Disease has not been detected in Oregon. We want to catch this disease early if it shows up in Oregon as it can have devastating affects on deer and elk populations. Adenovirus Hemorrhagic Disease is not known in the Grand Ronde area but has been detected in southwest and central Oregon. Samples will help determine where adenovirus is found in Oregon. How to Participate: Allow the Tribes' biologists to collect samples of brain stems from elk and samples of lice, blood and brainstems from deer. All samples must be collected within 48 hours of death, 24 hours preferred. Bring hunter harvested animals to the Tribes' Natural Resources office at 47010 S.W. Hebo Road, Monday through Friday from 8 to 4:30 p.m. If you are unable to bring an animal in we may be able to come to you to collect samples. Please contact the Tribe's biologists for more information. If the entire animal can't be brought in, then provide the hide for lice samples, the heart for a blood sample and the head for a brain sample. All parts can be returned after samples are taken. Hunters will need to provide the general location of where the animal was killed (to be used in the event that a disease is found). Your name will be entered in the drawing for each useable sample we are able to collect, up to one for each elk, and up to three entries for each deer. Fresh road kills can be reported to the Tribes' biologists so we can pick it up for sampling. Your name would then be entered for any useable samples we collect from the road kill. Tribal members and the general public are eligible to participate. Animals must be harvested legally. The Grand Ronde Tribal Housing Authority has one Board of Com missioners seat open. Any Tribal member who is interested in serving in this position and who has housing related experience to qualify for the position is encouraged to attend the September 16 and October 21 Board meetings. The meetings are at 5:30 p.m. at the Housing Au thority office in Grand Ronde. Please call to confirm the date and time. This is an opportunity to: 1) observe how the board functions, 2) become acquainted with the types of issues that are regularly discussed and 3) determine if you are seriously interested in such a position now or in the future. The open position has a term which expires in March 2005. Interested persons should have a demonstrated interest in housing and experience in the housing field in some capacity, such as: B affordable housing development B property management B residential building construction B housing financing B housing planning B other housing related areas The board oversees all housing development, housing management and housing operations for the Tribe, and is responsible for housing policy decisions. The board currently meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Housing Authority office in Grand Ronde.
