2 MAY 15, 2003 Smoke Signals Dear Smoke Signals, I want to take this opportunity to express the happiness that the Tribal Hous ing Authority and the Tribal Education Department have done for myself, my family, my mother and my sister and her family. It all started about five years ago when I realized my sister, Shereena Lanier, who was always so great in math, was the only sibling left in our family who didn't have a college education. I, like her, never completed school past the ninth grade and both of us had gotten our GEDs. I suggested to her to try and go back and try accounting. She didn't think it to be possible. I told her it was as I completed nursing school as a single parent and that she could go to college with the Tribe's help. Well, thanks to the Education Department and five years later, my sister is now done and has a Bachelor's Degree and walks with her class this May. I want her to know how proud I am of her and her accomplish ments. Next, we are grateful for the Elder income that is provided to my mother, Sharon Beard. I also am thankful of the Elder group that my mother has been going to keeping her busy and going places. She and her brothers (my uncles, Gary LaChance & Tom LaChance) all enjoy the trips and gatherings that they have. Last but no least, as I sit here writing this letter, I begin to feel teary eyed, I want to thank the Housing Authority, specifically Nancy Holmes, for the help in the down payment program. We purchased our very first home this spring. Without their help in this, we would not have been able to afford to do this. For these reasons, I'm so very grateful that our Tribe has the ability to treat us as a family. This is just what we are a family, a Tribe and this is how our ancestors were. They looked out for each other and this is what the Confederateded Tribes of Grand Ronde does for us. I thank the Lord we have OUR Tribe and for this we are blessed by our great spirit and the people who have made this possible, our Tribe, our people. Thank you so much. Roxanne Teeter Roll 1984 Thanks For The Support Jim Erb, District Sales Manager for Boyd's Coffee Company, second from left, hands a $7,500 check to Tribal Council Vice Chairman Reyn Leno in support of this year's Northwest Professional Rodeo Association events to be held in Grand Ronde.
