Smoke Signals 3 JANUARY 15, 2003 Sharon Norwest Honored For Dedication, Heart h .,...( Thank you - Northwest Indian Veterans' Association (NIVA) Secretary Sharon Norwest, the wife of Tribal Elder and Chairman of NIVA Marce Norwest, received a plaque from Dave Nelson of the Salem Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for her efforts helping hospitalized Veter ans. The plaque was presented at NIVA's monthly meet ing in Grand Ronde. The NIVA meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at the old preschool building. By Peta Tinda Sharon Norwest, the Northwest Indian Vet erans Association (NIVA) Secretary of 10 years, was presented a plaque from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for her work to help hospitalized American Veterans. Norwest, wife of Tribal member and NIVA Chairman Marce Norwest, has been collecting boxes of playing cards donated by Spirit Moun tain Casino and distributing them to disabled Veterans in hospitals as near as Portland and as far away as Washington, D.C. "You should see the fellas eyes light up when they get these cards," said Dave Nelson, who presented the plaque to Norwest on behalf of the V.F.W. members. Nelson is a member of the Veterans of For eign Wars Post 661, located in Salem. "It gives them something to do with their spare time," said Nelson. "They can play solitaire. If you could see the guys when they get these cards you'd know how much they appreciate it." Last year, Norwest said, she noticed that the NIVA Mj i TtT Veterans she spoke with would often request playing cards. So she told the casino man agement, and they put her on the list to receive the slightly used casino playing cards. Norwest then contacted the V.F.W. Post, the American Le gion and the Veterans Ad-hoc Committee, to help deliver the cards to the Veterans. "I wanted to do something to help," said Norwest. "Because these Veterans put they're lives on the line for us and I think if we can do something to help, we should." Norwest said she did not expect to be honored for her service and feels that doing what she does is her duty. She also said that she plans to continue helping disabled and hospitalized Vet erans as long as she can. "I'm going to keep doing what I can to help," said Norwest. "Because we owe it to them." B Long Road Ahead Cancer Recovery Takes Toll On Local Family Daughter's brain surgery leaves single mom in need. By Ron Karten Kathleen Salleng has a lot to be thankful for but a lot of worries, too. Her daughter, Danyel Leach, is home from brain surgery, getting stronger, ready to start speech therapy, radiation and chemotherapy, but since taking unpaid family leave from her job as a cook at Spirit Mountain Casino, her garbage service has been shut off, an eviction notice has ap peared on her front door, and until late one recent Friday night, she had no way to pay for Danyel's prescriptions. She checked the account set up for Danyel at U.S. Bank in Sheridan, but it held only $20. "I called the Salvation Army but they told me they're out of money," she said. "Same with the Red Cross." Although the Spirit Mountain Community Fund is on its way to giving out its twenty millionth dollar, it can by charter only give to non-profit organizations, but that didn't stop director Angie Blackwell from dropping everything to get on the phone to some of the non-profits she knows. Pretty quickly, she had secured help IN THE TRIBAL COURT OF THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OF OREGON In the Matter of: LICONA CASE NO. Salleng signed up for the casino's hardship fund, which will kick in by mid-January, but meanwhile, life for Salleng is looking like a page out of a Charles Dickens novel with one prob lem more pressing than the next. "I'm living on $35 a week child support and food boxes from Grand Sheramina (a support group work ing in the Grand Ronde, Sheridan and Willamina area)," she said.
