JUNE 1, 2002 Smoke Signals 11 Willamette Falls Lamprey Harvest Regulations The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has changed its Pacific lamprey harvest regulations, effective this season. Commercial harvest is no longer allowed at Willamette Falls. Personal use harvest for both Tribal and non-Tribal people is allowed with no state harvest limit. The open fishing area is the Willamette River at Willamette Falls on the east side of the falls only, excluding the Horseshoe Area at the peak of the falls. Har vest gear is restricted to hand or hand-powered tool only. Harvest is open ' during daylight hours on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, from June 1 through July 31. Non-Tribal members are required to carry a state-issued permit. Per mits may be obtained from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, free of charge, by contacting their Clackamas office at 17330 SE Evelyn Street, Clackamas, OR 97014, telephone 503-657-2000. The state has authorized the Tribe to allow Tribal members to harvest without a state permit. However, Tribal members will need to carry their Tribal enroll ment cards while harvesting. We are requesting that Tribal members report their catch to Natural Resources. If any Elders would like us to obtain some eels for them, please contact Natural Resources at 503-879-2424. Reserved lamprey will be distributed during the salmon distribu tion.
