2 JUNE 1, 2002 Smoke Signals Dear Smoke Signals, I am writing in regards to the mentorship program article published in the May 1, 2002 issue. I was very proud to see the vision my Tribe has foreseen in preserving the future of Tribal members to create self-sufficiency and to strive for a higher standard of living. I encourage whoever is in a position to be a mentor to become one and to give a Tribal member an opportunity to raise their level of knowledge and self-esteem into a positive opportunity of rewards for both involved. Not everyone wants to be the CEO, some may be content to do their job well and go home, but at least we now have a mentorship program that gives us either opportunity to strive for. Thank you Tribal Council, (past and present) for your vision to improve the quality of life and opportunities for each and every Tribal member. Sincerely, Jon A. George Gresham, Oregon Roll 1631 Dear Smoke Signals, I am writing you to thank the S.M.A.R.T. Program and Grand Ronde Elementary School for allowing me to spend an hour a week reading with the children. It has been a real pleasure and I am looking forward to returning again next year. Thank you, Gayle Herod Spirit Mountain Lodge employee May was National Foster Care Month, and we wanted to take this op portunity to thank all of our Tribal Foster Parents for the work they do caring for Tribal children and families in crisis heal. Tribal foster families not only provide temporary homes, safety and nur turing to our children, but they also help birth families by ensuring that children can be safely reunited with them. When reunification is not possible, many of our families choose to continue to care for the children who have been placed in their homes, offering permanency and stability the children would otherwise not know. Their commitment leaves an indelible mark on generations to come. They are helping to end cycles of neglect, abuse or drug addiction and are often helping a child be the first in his or her family to finish high school or even go to college. Children leave their homes knowing there are many other paths in life than what they've known. Thank you to Tribal Foster Parents for sharing your family and your home, giving love, encouragement and hope to children and families in need. If you are interested in being a foster parent for the Tribe's Foster Care Program, place call recruitment at 503-879-2039 for your foster care packet. '.rt' .
