"' . , . . , Tribe Hosts Annual Elder's Honor Day Tribe Hosts Annual Veteran's Pow-wow Traditional event gets bigger and better every year. By Brent Merrill Veterans hold an honored place in the Grand Ronde Tribal community. Veterans were honored at the Tribe's annual Veteran's Pow-wow, July 13 15 at the pow-wow grounds in Grand Ronde. The yearly pow-wow is just one of the many ways that Veterans are honored in the Tribal community. The Veteran's Pow-wow has grown from a small event involving a core group of Veterans and some interested community members to one of the Tribe's biggest and best attended events annually. After the grounds crews were finished setting up, the drum groups settled in to their areas, after the vendors rolled in and the campers picked their spots the event started with a Veteran's Royalty Pageant on Friday night (See story by Justin Phillips on page 8). Saturday was a full day of drumming, dancing and eating frybread and Indian tacos. Grand Entry started around noon and the Veteran's Color Guard lead the Tribal Council, Royalty participants and then the dancers into the arena. (See story by Willie Mercier on page 9). ' Whipman Craig Whitehead, the son of legendary whipman Paul White head, kept the young dancers in line. The late Paul Whitehead, Craig's father, served as the whipman at Grand Ronde pow-wows for many years. Now, the honor has been passed down to Craig. Master of Ceremonies Bob Tom once again brought his unique brand of humor and respect to this year's event. At times, his warm voice filled the arena with laughter. Sunday was a day of honoring our warriors. Vet erans, regardless of the theater they served in, were honored and thanked for their role in pre serving the country and laying the groundwork for what we have today.
