Tribe Hosts Annual
Veteran's Pow-wow
Traditional event gets bigger and better every year.
By Brent Merrill
Veterans hold an honored place in the Grand Ronde Tribal community.
Veterans were honored at the Tribe's annual Veteran's Pow-wow, July 13
15 at the pow-wow grounds in Grand Ronde. The yearly pow-wow is just
one of the many ways that Veterans are honored in the Tribal community.
The Veteran's Pow-wow has grown from a small event involving a core
group of Veterans and some interested community members to one of the
Tribe's biggest and best attended events annually.
After the grounds crews were finished setting up, the drum groups settled
in to their areas, after the vendors rolled in and the campers picked their
spots the event started with a Veteran's Royalty Pageant on Friday night
(See story by Justin Phillips on page 8).
Saturday was a full day of drumming, dancing and eating frybread and
Indian tacos. Grand Entry started around noon and the Veteran's Color
Guard lead the Tribal Council, Royalty participants and then the dancers
into the arena. (See story by Willie Mercier on page 9).
' Whipman Craig Whitehead, the son of legendary whipman Paul White
head, kept the young dancers in line. The late Paul Whitehead, Craig's
father, served as the whipman at Grand Ronde pow-wows for many years.
Now, the honor has been passed down to Craig.
Master of Ceremonies Bob Tom once again
brought his unique brand of humor and respect
to this year's event. At times, his warm voice filled
the arena with laughter.
Sunday was a day of honoring our warriors. Vet
erans, regardless of the theater they served in,
were honored and thanked for their role in pre
serving the country and laying the groundwork
for what we have today.
