By Brent Merrill Elder abuse in our community? Couldn't happen here. But, unfortunately it does happen. "Recognition and Response to El der Abuse in the Community" was the first conference of its kind to be held in Grand Ronde. The confer ence was held on Saturday, May 5 at the Tribe's Spirit Mountain Ca sino. The conference was sponsored by the Tribe and moderated by Tribal member Bonnie Tom. Nearly 100 people participated in this year's conference. Tribal Chair Kathryn Harrison opened the day with the invocation and Tribal Council Vice-Chairman Ed Larsen welcomed the participants and explained the reasons for the con ference. The Tribe's Social Services Direc tor Anthony Gagliardo and Senior and Disabled Services Division Rep resentative Aileen Kaye gave partici pants a general overview and Tribal Court Judge Katherine English gave a presentation on mandatory report . ing of Elder abuse. English said everyone is a manda tory reporter of abuse. She said it is everyone's duty and obligation to re port Elder abuse when they witness it or even suspect it. English was animated in sharing her desire to have people err on the side of caution rather than taking a chance and not report ing what could actually be abuse. Miller spoke of her work with her Elders and shared memories of how important relationships can be. Miller said it was an honor to be asked to participate in this year's event. ' 4 VJ .. fcsf .-- J Just for YOU Grand Ronde Tribal Chair Kathryn Harrison was honored at the May General Council meeting for her years of dedicated service to the Tribe. Harrison announced that she would not be seeking re-election to the Tribal Council this year. Above Tribal Council Secretary Reyn Leno pins an honor corsage on Harrison while Tribal members gave her a standing ova tion. Several Tribal members took the microphone to personally thank Har rison for her leadership.
