Jazzman Jim Pepper, of Creek and Kaw ancestry, was the first to incorporate ele ments of Native American music with jazz-fusion. He was one of the most famous jazz players to emerge from Portland. Pepper passed away of lymphoma in 1992 at the age of 50. He was posthumously awarded the First Americans in the Arts' Lifetime Achieve ment in the Area of Music award in 1999. His song "Witchi Tai To" was popular in the early 1970s. "Our purpose is to obliterate the line between Western art music and alternative music," said Taylor. "The three of us (Taylor along with Lee and Schiff), who are all experienced composers and arrangers of jazz and classical music, have worked to create arrangements of the highest artistic level to pay tribute to Jim Pepper." "This was Hollis' idea first," says Lee, who began working with Pepper back in 1978. "I used the five-note cycle found in most Native American music to arrange Jim's music. The melodies are like nursery rhymes, and the arrangements have an almost Baroque style that involves many melodies and jazz harmonies. If s the way Jim would have wanted it." Qi Taylor was the youngest member of the Oregon Symphony when she began playing with them at age 18. She played in folk, country and jazz genres throughout North America and Europe. This year, Taylor's Trail Mix for Five Scordatura Violins from her compact disc "Frames and Boxes" won a national first prize. Taylor lives in Brooklyn. Lee performed with Pepper throughout North America and Europe. Lee has also performed with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Oregon Symphony. Lee is on the faculty of Western Oregon University. Schiff, a composer, music critic and musical scholar, is the author of two books, "The Music of Elliott Carter" and "George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue." Schiff 's major com missions include works for the Oregon Symphony, the Chamber Music Society of Lin coln Center, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival and the 125th anniversary of Congregation Beth Israel. -'i . : Phil Baker was on acoustic bass. "Including a jazz bass player with a string quartet is certainly a rarity," says Taylor. Baker is skilled on both the acoustic and electric bass. Baker, who was with Diana Ross for nine years early in his career, counts his performance at "Motown 25" as one of his career highlights. He's performed with Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Linda Ronstadt, Eddie Harris, Joe Henderson, Diane Schuur, Ernie Watts and many others. The quintet consisted of Taylor and Ann Christensen, violins; Joel Beligique, viola; Nancy Ives, cello; and Baker, bass. Ives is a champion of new music and has appeared with Nana Vasconcelos and Laurie Anderson and Gal Costa. She has recorded with rocker Lenny Kravitz and spent several years touring with "Phantom of the Opera." The tribute concert was a reminder that musicians that pass on are gone, but their music lives on forever. iMlfifl31ffi ifflrjffftj mm TRIBAL ELDERS AND FRL DEC. 1 SPOUSES EAT FREE.
