I 8 Smoke Signals BOOK REVIEW Local Man Writes Book of Memories about Logging and Hunting "A 600 There is no frigate like a book, to take us lands away, , ij, (" nor coursers like a page, of prancing poetry. Ihis traverse may the poorest take, without oppress of toll; how frugal is the chariot that bears the human soul." Emily Dickinson By Brent Merrill Local legends seem to grow taller as the years go by. They take on a life of their own and they grow as tall as the old trees felled by log gers. They grow as big as the ant lers of the largest elk. One local man has compiled his memories of logging and hunting in Oregon and British Columbia into a book. "Go Ahead On 'er! The Life and Times of Kenneth M. Shenk" details Shenk's experiences and adventures from his early childhood memories in the 1920s through his days as a young professional and on into the 1990s as the patriarch of his grow ing family. Shenk weaves his wry humor into his vibrant descriptions throughout the book. He describes milking his father's collection of dairy cows with diligence and caring, and laments the fact he and his wife Francis did not have electricity in their home until their oldest son was a senior in high school. The slow death of the Northwest's once viable and world-class timber industry saddens Shenk and is a re occurring theme throughout the book. One of the strong points of the author's tales is that folks in this area who have been loggers and spent time hunting as well as those who have just raised families will re late to this book. Shenk lauds the sacrifices of his wife for letting him lead the family and pursue his dreams. His dreams became her dreams and then they became the dreams of his children and grandchildren in turn. As a young man, he placed the integrity of his parents on a pedestal so high it became his goal and driving ambi tion to be like them. His first job was at a timber mill on Mill Creek Road here in Sheridan. He loaded planks for $1.59 and hour and paid a single penny each payday towards workman's compensation. The book is full of logging sto ries laden with local names and pho tos of Shenk and some of his larger-than-life, true-grit characters. Shenk uses his older photos to help tell his tales and his poetry is dis persed throughout the stories and help to let the reader follow through the author's eyes his journey through adulthood and on into his later years. ) V-r 77 - f v.v t r I f Y"' " This book is worth a read and it will take you down memory lane if you have lived in this area for many years or just want a glimpse into lo cal history.
