Education Smoke Signals OHSU to host science camp College Jump Start Seminar The Multicultural Affairs Office at the Oregon Health Sciences Univer sity (OHSU) is accepting applications for this year's Your Opportunities in Science (YO Science) Camp for middle school students. The program is scheduled for July 6-17, 1998 and will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. To be eligible, students must have completed the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade by the 1998 academic year and have demonstrated a strong interest in sci ence or the health professions. Stu dents will participate in applied life sciences classes, hands on projects, career development seminars and motivational discussions with cultur ally diverse health professions stu dents and faculty. There are no reg istration fees for participating in the program. YO Science was established by the School of Medicine to advance the goals of Project 3000 by 2000, a na tional initiative aimed at enrolling 3000 underrepresented minority medical students by the year 2000. The camp is funded by the Area Health Education Center state office, School of Medicine, OHSU, and the Columbia Willamette Area Health Education Center. "The program uses hands-on ac tivities to introduce students to the health care professions while helping them see the application of science, math and other academic disciplines," said Leslie Garcia, Program Direc tor and Assistant Director for Multicultural Affairs, OHSU. The program is administered for OHSU's Multicultural Affairs Office. The office administers the program and mails applications to Portland metropolitan middle schools. Call 503-494-7574 for a packet. Interested in getting a head start on your college education? Students ages 16 and older can, with Chemeketa Community College's Jump Start Seminar. Sharpen study skills in prepara tion for college. Learn the latest cyberskills, in cluding the newest Internet and mul timedia software. Earn six transferable college credits in only two weeks over the summer. College Jump Start Seminars will be offered July 27-August 7 at the Dallas Campus, 182 SW Academy Street. Class will teach "people skills" In June, Career Track will be a of fering a seminar in Salem, Portland, and Eugene on "How to Handle People with Tact and Skill. " The class will teach strategies on dealing with difficult people at work. The semi nar will be held in Eugene on June 3; Salem on June 4; and Portland on June 5 and 6. For the adult members of the Tribe, the fees for this class can be covered through the Adult Education program under its Skill Development Component. Willamina, Grand Ronde The Tribal Education Program co-sponsored an "I'm Going To College" day for local 5th graders on Thursday, May 14. The students were bussed to the Chemeketa Community College campus in Salem, Oregon. Upon arrival they went through the registration and student ID process, then visited the bookstore to pick up supplies. The students attended several class offerings including: On-line Demonstration, Manufacturing & Technol- 5th graders visit college ogy tour, CAD Project, Fire Suppression Program and a planetarium show. The Chemeketa Student Government sponsored a BBQ lunch for the students. Many of the kids said they had a good time and learned a lot. This is one of the activities that give the, 5th graders, the opportunity to meet and interact with each other before attending Willamina Middle School for 6th grade.
