Page 10 July 1,1995 Smoke Signals Elder makes shawls for Royalty Dorothy Lawe, a tribal elder living in Willamina, is always busy this time of year. It's summer, and that means it's time to get ready for Pow-wow. And Dorothy's unique crafts and regalia work arc always in demand. For several years now, she has made the dancing shawls for the Grand Ronde Royalty Queen and Princesses. Her combination of unique colors and oil paint designs make them truly a work of art. Every Tuesday, Dor othy volunteers to teach craft class to the youth at Nanitch Sahallie Treat ment Facility in Salem. "The kids like to make dreamcatchers, key chains, and other decora tive items," she said. "They get a lot of satisfaction from completing a project." In addition to making shawls, Dorothy has also beaded the crowns for the Royalty Queen. "It was my daughter, Diane, who taught me to bead," she said. "Diane learned when she was very young. I haven't been beading nearly as long as she has." Dorothy has two daughters, Diane and Rennee. She lived in Nevada with her husband for many years before moving back to Oregon. Her husband was a hospital administrator for Indian Health Service, and she worked as a dietician. Since coming back to Oregon, Dorothy has been very active within the Tribe. Her commitment to the Royalty Committee and the youth at Nanitch are just a part of her involvement. y ' , r ' 1995 Grand Ronde Pow-wow Events Friday, August 18 6 p.m.: Royalty Pageant 8 p.m.: Open Drumming and Dancing Saturday, August 19 7 a.m.: Breakfast 7 a.m.: Volksmarche 8:30 a.m.: Fun RunWalk Activities Begin 9 a.m.: Co-Ed Softball Tournament 10 a.m.: Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament 11 a.m.: Parade Noon: Tribal Meal 1 p.m.: Grand Entry 6 p.m.: Grand Entry Sunday, August 20 7 a.m.: Breakfast 1 p.m.: Grand Entry Grand Ronde Pow-wow Grounds NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL PERMITTED For more information call 1-800-422-0232 r f .
