The un veiling included lunch and a story in Chinook jargon, told by tribal elder, I la Dowd. The logo, a coyote leaping over Spirit Mountain, was designed by Sandstrom Design in Portland. They are a reputable graphic design company specializing in logo identity, whose clients have included Nike and other large Oregon companies. "Our goal is to have every Oregonian recognize this logo on site, and know where its from," said Bruce Thomas, SMDC gen eral manager. "We had a theme associated with tribal legends. The coyote is a prominent feature in many of these stories." The logo will be featured in casino items such as employee badges, furniture, slot machines, and on billboards. There will be a gift shop in the casino with mugs, hats, t-shirts and other tradi tional gift items, all featuring the new logo. There will be banners lining the casino entrance, too. "A good logo is the basis for any marketing program," said Bruce. "This design works with almost every medium, and has advertis ing appeal." Bruce said that when designs like this one are featured on so many items, simplicity is the key. This is because the logo is a permanent fixture of the organization and needs to be recogniz able. SMDC registered it as a national trademark to prevent other com panies from copying it. Construction of the casino is on schedule, and is still set to open in October. The highway work is also in progress. SMDC has hired some casino staff. They include a marketing director, maintenance services manager, and a consultant.
