Smoke Signals March 17, 1995 Page 2 Tribal Life - - Head Start Begins Recycling Project in Grand Ronde By Angela Bedortha As many of you already know, it has long been the tradition of Na tive American People to preserve the earth's natural resources by tak ing only what we need and to keep our air, land and water clean. . Recycling items like newspapers, magazines, cans, glass and plastic not only preserves resources, but also saves energy and cuts down on air pollution. Did you know that it takes approximately 500 years for a milk jug to disintegrate in a land fill? Or that for every pound of milk jugs recycled we save enough energy to use a 100 watt light bulb for almost an entire week? , Here at Head Start, each of our children has committed themselves to recycle one of the above men tioned items from their home for 2 weeks, which we will then deliver to the recycling center as a class. In addition, with assistance from Notice of Amendment to Election Ordinance and election information Section (e)(2) shall read "The Board shall send a ballot to each registered voter, whether or not they request a ballot." ' ' 1 ;v "r! Section (c) will change all references of "signature" cards to "registration" cards. Section (c)(2)(B)(5) shall allow registered voters whose names have changed to vote at one election prior to re registering at the Enrollment Office. Section (f)(5) changes the time for written notice of appeal of a Board decision from 2 days to 4 days. Nominations Nominations for Tribal Council will be held at the May 1995 General Council meeting. Any dually enrolled member who will be 18 years of age or older by the date of the election is qualified to run. Any eligible voter may nominate from the floor at the May meeting. However, the candidate must be present to accept or decline the nomination. Current Council mem bers up for reelection are: Andrew Jenness, Kathryn Harrison, and Ed Larsen. If you have questions regarding the electoral process, nominations, or changes in the ordinance, please contact Sharon Hansen, Election Committee Chairperson, at the tribal offices. the children, we are also recycling all of the milk jugs and cans we use here for meals. We have our own recycling bins here, which are re ally reused 5 gallon buckets. Reusing is another way to pre serve our resources. Our 3, 4 and 5 year old children had many great ideas for reusing items. I'm sure you could come up with at least as many creative uses for your old plastic containers, glass jars or out grown clothing. If you aren't already recycling, try beginning with just one item, some thing you use most often, and go from there. I am reminded of an old saying I heard somewhere, "We do not in herit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." Good luck with your recycling efforts, however grand or small they may be;;; ;;;;; ;; ;";',;'('',;' Tribal member news and announcements Royalty Information By Camille Mercier For all girls interested in running for Honorary, Junior, and Senior Miss Grand Ronde, there will be a mandatory meeting on April 20 at the Tribal Community Center. The ; meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. If 1 you or your child is interested, you both must attend this informal meeting to register. There will be no late registration, so both spon sorparent and child must be present. Age categories are as follows; 6- 10 for Honorary Court; 1-14 for Junior; and 1,5-19 for Senior. j This meeting will be an excellent i way for you to ask questions about what to expect during the next few : months, and to meet the Pow-wow Committee. Miss Grand Ronde 1994 will be there to meet you and share her ex- neriences in running, and repre senting the Tribe throughout the j year. 1 look torwara to seeing you on April 20. Craft Class update The next craft class will be held April 18th at the Tribal Commu- : 'nity Center. ' It will begirt a 7 p.ta. ' Please be prompt and expect to stay ; until the class is finished. If you have special feathers you would like to use, please bring them along with a 12" X 12" piece of card board. Please call Camille at 879-2901 to register by April 15. ' ! ;.,::.!,:;'., j Veteran's Committee; members and raffle Veteran's Committee meetings are the first Monday of every month at the Tribal Community Center and begin at 6:30 p.m. All veter ans are invited to attend, tribal or non-tribal. The committee is holding a raffle to fund a veteran's memorial here in Grand Ronde. The raffle prize is a 1 3 inch color television. Tick ets are on sale at $1 each or 6 for $5. The raffle will take place at the April General Council Meeting. Current Veteran's Committee members are: Dale Langley, Chair; Buddy Haskins, Vice-Chair; Westly West, Treasurer; Ivan Lan gley, Secretary; Marcellus Norwest, Sergeant at Arms, Butch LaBonte, and Curley Spencer. Narcotics Anonymous meetings at A & D Narcotic Anonymous meets ev ery Tuesday at the Alcohol and Drug (Riley Porter building) at 6:30 p.m. All tribal members and com munity members are welcome to attend. Sfanitch offers monthly luncheon to elders On the first Monday of every month, elders are invited to Nanitch Sahallie Youth Treatment Facility in Keizer, Oregon for lunch. Please call Tracy Biery to sign up if you want to attend. Every Thursday thejelden-jyi picks up elders at the Payless Park ing lot near the Marion Street bridge in Salem for lunch. Payless has given permission to park cars there for this purpose. Please be there by 10:15, departure time is 10:20. All tribal elders and their spouses, and widows or widowers of tribal elders are invited to attend lunch at the Community Center in Grand Ronde. Look Who's 60!!!
