Smoke Signals August 1992 Page 4 Tribal Member in Vienna Marie Landreth, daughter of Anna Landreth of Redmond, Oregon, is a success story we don't hear about very often. Ms. Landreth is currently touring with the Vienna Orchestra located in Vienna, Austria. She is studying at the Academy of Music there. She'll be traveling as the soloist from the Vienese Orchestra from New York to British Columbia, then to San Francisco, and back to Vienna in November. In March of 1993 she will again be traveling, this time to Japan. Ms. Landreth received her musical training at Central Oregon Community College and University of Oregon. She won a Rotary International Foundation Grant for study at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Her performances world-wide since receiving the grant have been numerous. She has been a featured soloist with the Johann Strauss Orchestra of Vienna, the Vienna Soloist, the Vienna Mozart Philharmonic, and the Residenz Orchestra of the Palais Auersperg, among other things. Three years ago, Marie sang the Lord's Prayer at the Grand Ronde annual Pow-wow. Those who were there will agree she has an extraordinary talent, and is an inspiration to other tribal members. you have heard of a tribal member who has been Marie Landreth, Oregonian and Tribal successful doing something exciting or different, SMOKE member, is currently singing in Vienna. Some Indians think they can't get AIDSespecially Indians living on reservations. They think AIDS is caught only if you live in the city. But Indainstravel from cities to reservationsto rodeos, conferences, powwows, tournaments, ceremonies, all over the U.S. and Canada. Some Indians think they can't get AIDS, because they don't use IV drugs (drugs injected into the vein). But Indians do use IV drugs (they shoot up). Some Indians think they can't get AIDS from sex since many Indians only have sex with other Indians. But Indians do have sex with persons of their choice, people who mayor may not be Indian and people who they may or may not know. HOW DO YOU GET AIDS? AIDS Is passed (traded) by body fluids: blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. RISKY BEHAVIOR SPREADS AIDS SEXINTERCOURSE: semen, vaginal fluids, or blood is passed during sex. This includes anal, vaginal, or oral sex between two or more people. So use a latex condom with Nonoxinol 9 from start to finish. And use a condom every time you have sex, with everyone! IV DRUG USE: Sharing IV drug equipment (works) puts the drugs blood and AIDS virus right into your blood. Do not share needles!!! MOM TO BABY: If the mother Is infected with the AIDS virus, there is a 50-50 chance that her baby will be born with AIDS. 70-80 of these babies die before age 3. INDIANS ARE DYING FROM AIDS Before 1982, only two Indians were knownto have AIDS. As of September, 1988, 77 Indians were known to have AIDS half of those have died from it. CAN YOU TELL IF SOMEONE HAS AIDS? No. A person can still look healthy and have the AIDS virus.
