You have made us all PROUD! Did You File? If you're contemplating on attending school during the '90-'91 school year, the question that must be asked is; DID YOU FILE YOUR FINANCIAL AID FORM FOR THE '90-'91 SCHOOL YEAR? If you didn't your application will not be considered without this filing. You can obtain a copy of the FAF by contacting the Tribal Education Program or by contacting the Financial Aid Office at the school you plan to attend. Remember, even if you are considering not attending school until Winter Term '91 or Spring Term '91, you should file the FAF now! For more information call DEAN at 879 5211. Deadline For Accepting Applications Planning going to school during FALL '90? If you are, you must have your completed application into this office no later than JULY 30th. 1990. ' The application must be complete and include all necessary documenta tion as indicated in your respective Higher Education or Adult Vocational Training application packet. If you are needing verification from the Tribal Enrollment Office as to membership, you must contact Margo Mcrcicr directly. No information will automatically be released to the Education Program without your consent. Applications received after the JULY 30th deadline will be placed on a "Waiting List" for the Winter Term '91 consideration. Don't forget, JULY 30th!!! Good Turn Out! On May 31st, 1990, the Educational Program spon sored a "Parent & Student Night" for new and continu ing students who will be attending college during the '90 '91 school year. We had approximately 18 students and parents attend the activity. Both parents and students were provided an opportunity to meet with representa tives from Southern Oregon State College ; Portland State University and Chcmcketa Community College. Questions were asked regarding financial aid applica tion, college living, dealing with personal problems for students and getting help with classes. Representatives shared helpful hints and insights as to preparing for school and what students should expect. Attending from Portland State University were Edward Alvarez, Maria Alanis and Tina Villalobos, who worked for the Tribe as telephone receptionist. Francisco Garcia, represented Chemekcta Community College and Ms. Joan Jackson attended on behalf of Southern Oregon State College. Because of the response from students and parents, another parent and student gathering will be held in late August or early September. If you missed the last one, plan on attending the next one! Interested in Taking a Class This Summer? If you are interested in taking a class at a local commu nity college or possibly participate in a community educational activity, contact the Adult Education Program. There are limited funds to pay for tuition, fees and books for summer classes. To be eligible for Adult Education Assistance, you must be 17 years or older; be an enrolled member of The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde; and you must reside within the Tribes six county service area, (Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill, Tillamook, Polk and Marion counties). To obtain more information, please call Dean Azule at 879-5211. Tribal Education Committee hasVacancv The Tribal Education Committee has one vacant position. If you are interested in serving on the Educa tion Committee, please contact Jackie Colton, for an application. Committee guidelines and purpose state ments can be obtained by contacting the Tribal Educa tional Program. Committee Meeting The next Education Committee meeting has been scheduled for July 28th,1990 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Meeting will be held in the Grand Ronde, Tribal Council Room. Kelly Nelson NAME: KELLY JEANNE (PICHETTE) NELSON SCHOOL: California State University Sacramento DEGREE: Bachelor of Arts, Schools of Arts & Science MAJOR: Biology MINOR: Chemistry Kelly's dream is to become a family physician and this past June she took another step toward realizing that goal. She graduated from C.S.U.S. with a B A. degree and also applied for Medical School admission and , Masters Program admission for the 1990-91 school year. Kelly commented several times that the program she has chosen is a difficult one, but with all the hard work and support from her family and relatives, she has come to grips making her dream very real! Kelly's husband is Rob Nelson and their two children are Sarah and Raymond. Rob too has had his hands full with school, he attended C.S.U.S. and graduated last year with his Bachelor's Degree, as well. Her parents are John and Jayne Pichette. In concluding her undergraduate experience at C.S.U.S., Kelly maintained a 3.20 Grade Point Average and earned Dean's Honor List distinction her last semester with a GPA of 3.50! Kelly for all your hard work, perseverance and the honor that you have earned, our congratulations. We know in the very near future, you will gain the title of Dr. Nelson, M.D.H Berkey(cont.) Her return was impressive. She earned a 4.00 GPA her first two terms. Concluding her program, Shanon's accumulative GPA was a 3.41. She earned Honor Roll and Dean's List distinction and in June she received her diploma and certificate. Shanon's parents are Diana and Edward Denheur. Her aunt is Candy Robertson. Shanon's immediate plans call for a short vacation before she takes the Oregon State Exams for Medical Assistant Certification. She also has been successful in obtaining employment and has landed a job with Salem Pediatric Clinic in their clinic office. Shanon, you have our congratulations! To be able to return to school and complete your program after sitting out for a period of time is truly remarkable! (V til f I 1 I Shanon Berkey Tamara Bovee Name: Tamara Bovee School: University of Oregon Degree: Bachelor of Science, School of Education Program: Physical Education & K-12 , Teaching Certifi cate of Human Movement Studies Oregon Tamara is a confident 23 year old who demonstrates perseverance and determination. Prior to Ms. Bovee's enrolling in the Tribe's Higher Education Program, Tamara had already completed a large portion of her program. She didn't let the lack of money or help prevent her from seeking an education. Funded largely by financial aid and the support of her husband, Joe Bovee, and her family, she obtained assistance on through her own efforts. During the last quarter of school Ms. Bovee conducted her practicum teaching at Kelly Middle School in the Eugene School District. In review of her college experience, Tamara earned a 3.00 GPA while attending the University. She felt that working with the middle school age students opened her eyes to a lot of needs that todays children are faced (Continued on page 5.) 4-
