I PASSES '9,811 ACRE I RESERVATION BILL sg r? : i -l J TT yaMWM&Miaani f c :w srr Tillamook County Yamhill County 4 Polk County PROPOSED GRAND HONOE INOIAN RESERVATION he Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs passed without opposition, a bill that would establish a 9,811 acre reservation for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The bill is similar to H 4143 passed in the House earlier this summer. The bill now goes to the Senate floor for a vote. If successful on the floor of the Senate, the bill then goes to the President's desk for his signature to become law. The proposed reservation lands are located in Yamhill county and the timbered lands would primarily be used to generate income for the tribe to provide economic development, and supplement existing health, education and social service programs operated by the Tribe. Grand Ronde Tribal elders recently visited the Horner Museum at Oregon State University to view cultural and historical displays; and spent an afternoon visiting Siletz elders who came for a lunch of Med salmon, sandwiches and other good things to eat At left, front to back, is Marie Logan, Dorothy Greene, Mabel Gaston, and 11a Dowd sitting in old school desks and remembering their school days during their visit to the Horner Museum, More photos c mm 7ribal youth enjoyed a day of digging for cockles, blues, steamers...and other clams on. a recent activity sponsored by the Social Serv ices Department with assistance by the fish and Wdlife Committee, The youth cleaned their catch and enjoyed a meal of steamed and fried clams, clam chowder and fry bread! At left, Soloman George displays a sample of his catch ELECTIONS FOR TRIBAL COUNCIL ' - SEPT. 10TH Tribal Council elections are set for September 10, 1988 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Tribal Office. Three seats are open. Candidates seeking the positions are: John Allen, Frank Harrison, Merle Holmes, Marvin Kimsey, Gene LaBonte, Ed Larsen, Merle Leno, Tom Leno, Ray McKnight, Darrel Mercier and Riley Porter. The seats are currently held by Gene LaBonte, Merle Leno and Ray McKnight. The Tribal Council winners will be sworn in on Septem ber 18, 1988 at the General Council meeting which will start at 12 noon. Tribal members can vote by absentee ballot, but must complete an absentee ballot request form and return it to the Election Board. All absentee ballots are due by 6:00 p.m. on September 10th, 1988. r The Grand Ronde Tribes will host their 4th Annual Pow-mow on August 20, 1988. Lots of activiUes are planned, including a fine meal, a fun runwalk, a horseshoe tournament, a specal presentation by Raul Ortega, the tribal pageant, and of course, the Pow-wow itself.
