ENROLLMENT HUNTINGFISHINGGATHERING REPORT Dear Fellow Tribal Members and Friends, Our Tribal membership now totals 2051. Con gratulations to all of our new members! Also, a big thank-you to all of my clients who have informed the Tribal office of a change of address. The importance of having the correct address on file cannot be stressed enough. I.D. CARD UPDATE: The Tribal I.D. cards will be issued in April. They are photo I.D. cards similar to the Oregon drivers license. I suggest that bright clothing be worn, as they are color photo's. As yet, I have not com pleted the schedule for visiting the six county service area to issue the I.D. cards. The April issue of "Smoke Signals" will contain the procedure requirements and schedule. ANYONE WITHOUT AN ENROLLMENT NUMBER WILL NOT BE ISSUED AN I.D. CARD. The I.D. cards will be used in the future as the Tribal hunting and fishing license. There are many incomplete files on hand. If you or a relative have not received an enroll ment number, you probably are not enrolled. Many clients believe that if their children receive benefits from Indian Health Services, that the child is automatically enrolled. NOT SOI -An enrollment application must be completed and processed before a roll number is issued. Please contact me at the depot tribal office if you have any questions on the enrollment pro cedure or the I.D. cards. While I am planning the I.D. card procedure, I may be out of the office. Please call ahead if you are from out of town. The secretary will have the date of my return for your information. Sincerely, Margo George Enrollment Clerk POW-WOW COMMITTEE REPORT Many people have showed interest in the pow-wow. This is good to see since we will need all the help possible to make a successful event. If you are interested in working on the pow-wow, the next meeting will follow the activities on March 1, 1987 at Grand Ronde Elementary School. DON'T FORGET!!! Tribal logo jackets are available at the Spirit Mountain Store. As mentioned last month, the Fishing, Hunt ing and Gathering Agreement between the Tribe and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has been finalized. However; tribal members will not be able to exercise their privilege-, until Tribal Identif icatior Cards and annual stickers are issued in April. The agreement includes the following: A defined "fishing and hunting" area for tribal members to exercise fishing, hunting and gathering rights. Tribal members must follow all state fishing, hunting and gathering regulations; including season and bag limits. Tribal members must purchase a state Salmon Steelhead or Sturgeon tag to angle for these fish. Tribal members will have the opportunity to harvest a total of 395 deer and elk (which total shall not include more than 45 elk), and five bear per year. Tribal members will have the right to gather eels, freshwater mussels, sea anemones, rock oysters, crawfish and salt water mussels. The Tribe will have the right to receive up to 4,000 lbs. of Salmon each year for distribution to members. No hunting, fishing and gathering can be for commercial purposes. A handbook, which will fully describe Tribal rights and responsibilities will be dist ributed to members at a later date. Tribal members are encouraged to join the Fishing and Wildlife Committee. The Committee will begin conducting business by mid-March. If you are interested in serving on the Com mittee, complete the Committee Application in this issue of the newsletter. The Committee will help coordinate tribal huntingfishing activities, establish related ordinances and act in an advisory capacity to the Tribal Council. For more information, contact Greg at 879-5215.
