r THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OT OREGON 5mok e UMPOUA MOLALLA ROGUE RIVER KALAPUYA CHASTA POBOXJ8 GRAND RONDE, OREGON 97M7 503 87W2I3 ' NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN Dear Fellow Tribal Members: The Tribal Council vlshes all of you a happy New Year. We thank everyone who worked so hard on the annual Christmas party held on December 20th, 1986. It was a big success. I am pleased to announce that the Hunting and Fishing agreement between the Tribe and the State of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission is finalized. On January 12, 1987, in the U.S. District Court, the judge formally signed the Decree, making it official. . This is a major step in getting the Grand Ronde reser vation established. In regards to the Reservation Plan, the Tribal Council released a draft agreement to the local timber companies. This agreement was drafted to address the concerns of the timber industry, which include export of logs, man agement of timber lands, and the tribe compet ing for public timber on nearby lands. The agreement, if signed, would ban the tribe from exporting and competing for public timber for ten years. In the near future, the Tribal Council will meet with the local timber company representatives to discuss the proposal. Also, in the near future, the Tribal Council hopes to meet with the l6t District Congress man, Les AuColn, to get a feel for his concerns of the Reservation Plan. nals FEBRUARY 1987 I wish to ask each and every one of you to write letters of support to your congressional delegation.
