COMMUNITY ORGANIZER COMMENTS CON'T . . . . Chairman, Marvin Kimsey, as soon as possible. Commissioner Ben Magill cams is during our meeting and listened a few minutes, since he had other commitment 8 r hfift fait he wasn't as well informed to give us his support right now. We're hoping tu meet with him at a later date. We were very pleased to receive the support of Commissioner Dougherty, who is no stranger to Grand Ronde since he Una attended one of our Pow Wows here. Oi! Saturday, January 23, 1982, I journeyed to Portland, Oregon to attend the Qth Anniversary Tea for Church Women United.. The Tea was held at the First United M.uthocUs-sl Church. After refreshments of cake, coffee and tea, everyone enjoyed v, short program which included recognition of all past- Presidents of Church Women Hnlltid. While there, I mat Jane Shepard, National Vice Chairwoman of Church Women United among others. I was able to thank her personally for the C.W.U. grant of (S.000 Lo The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Indians. This grant enabled the i'rib:; to hire me as the new Enrollment Clerk during the months of Oct., Nov. , Dec,,! 5(1 ciiid ,'iaaurary '82. During these months on this job, I worked with Cheryl Carl, a pfort-tiaui FinroUment Clerk. Together we set up the present filing system, identifying Grand r'ondo Tribal members who have applied for enrollment by blood quantum, age, state residence, and eompli.lirg of a new Enrollment P'orm to gather the necessary statistics on education, employment, health and housing needed for future testi monies in Washington D.C.. Mrs. Dorothy Ackerman, Rosebud Sioux, a member of United Indian Women Inc. was instrumental in letting me know about the celebration, also, attended. I was invited to return at ai later date to do a presentation and to show the slide prartesntation "Our Hearts Beat As One". Church Women United granted the money , useu to make the slide presentation possible. Also, C.W.U. has offered to help by keeping informed of our efforts towards Restoration and also by allowing to sand articles for publication in their Newsletter. f A I tor meeting with Church Women United I made & visit, to the Oregon Historical roiioi.y to make copies of two articles publishud in their publication "Quarterly" 1) "The Number and Condition of the Native Race in Oregon When First Seen by The White Men", by John Minto (Sept. 1900) Quarterly 2) "ExtinguisMng Indian Land Titles on the Oregon Coast" by Jerry 0 ' 0allagh,a (Sept. 1951) Quarterly These articles were recommended reading on the Grand Sondes from the National Archives, Washington D.C.; a part of the reply to roy letter seeking Information on The Confederated .Tribes of Grand Ronde, Another recommendation was to go to the Archives in Seattle, Washington.
