Wellbriety Celebrating Families! now in W.S. W ellbriety is a grow ing movement in Indian Coun try. This is the grassroots movement o f White Bison, based in Colorado, with part ners in many Indian commu nities. W hite B ison and Wellbriety provide culturally based healing— from addic tio n , abuse, and o th e r trauma— to the next seven generations o f Indigenous people. O n the W arm Springs Reservation, the Wellbriety Sons and Daughters o f Tra dition program led to cre ation o f the Soaring Butter flies and Warrior Spirits stu dent and youth programs. The Warm Springs Tribal Court has a Wellbriety alter native to criminal court (story at right). And last year Com munity Counseling formed the adult groups G uiding Butterflies and Mighty War riors. Sarah Wolfe at the Coun seling Center has been an adv o cate o f the local Wellbriety movement. Re cently, she saw the opportu nity to bring Wellbriety train ing to the reservation. The three-day training, held last week, now allows Community Counseling to host an eight-week Wellbriety Celebrating Families! p ro gram. Twenty-nine people took p a rt in the training. T he group used the conference room at Fire Management, as it provided the needed space. There are now 21 local people who are certified to facilitate the Wellbriety Cel ebrating Tamiliesl curriculum, coming up in April... “He said a grant was avail able, so we were able to host this training.” The trainers were J, Carlos Rivera, executive director o f W hite Bison, and Sparrow Goudey. Most o f the trainee par ticip an ts are fro m W arm S p rin g s^ fro m Community Counseling, Children’s Pro tective Services and Family Preservation, Indian Health Service, and from the com munity at large. M ost o f the comm unity participants have been part o f the Guiding Butterflies/ M ighty' W arrio rs ' classes. Seven o f the trainees came fro m o u t o f to w n — from Umatilla, Cow Creek, Lower Umpqua and Klamath Falls. As a result o f the training, there are now 21 local people who are certified to facilitate the W ellbriety C elebrating Families! curriculum. This curriculum can be held over the course o f 16 weeks, but the Warm Springs program will m eet twice a week for eight weeks, Sarah said. This will start in April. Sarah is now holding planning and orientation meetings for the facilitators. These meet ings are on Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. at Community Coun seling. The facilitators will con duct Wellbriety Celebrating Familities! sessions for dif feren t age groups: 4 to 7 year olds; 8 to 12; 13 to 17; and 18 and over. Everyone is welcome to take part the Wellbriety Cel ebrating Families! program. O r a person may come by family o r friend reference, from a councilor’s or some o ther reference. The over view o f the program is as follows: Celebrating Families! is a multi-family, strength-based, skill-building program serving children ages birth through 17, their parents, and caregivers. This evidence-basedprogram, in partnership with the National Association fo r Children o f Alcoholics, emphasises healthy living skills including addiction prevention! recovery; attachment; the development of a sense of hope and expanded life view; re duction dfstress/ anxiety and safety. Celebrating Families! has been shown by outside evalüa- tors with families dealing with addiction and child abuse/ne glect to strengthen recovery, im prove family re-unification, and increase healthy living skills for families impacted by substance abuse disorders. The business was a suc cess. “R edm ond didn’t have a b eau ty o u tle t,” M arlanea says. “And we w an ted to b rin g th ese products to the customers here.” The next closest outlet was in Bend. A fte r a year, Sally Beauty opened an outlet in Redmond. Instead o f seeing this as competition, Marlanea and James saw it as a chance to focus on th e p ro d u c ts th ey are m ost interested in. Some o f their favorite and most popular are beauty prod- Tribal Court sees first Wellbriety graduate The Tribal Court, prosecutor’s office, and Parole and Probation began the Warm Springs Wellbriety program last year. The program helps people who are in trouble due to alcohol or drugs. A person w ho completes the Wellbriety program can have his or her criminal charge dismissed by the court. The program requires more than 100 sessions o f treatment, lasting at least 36 weeks. The Wellbriety C ourt on February 10 marked a m ilestone, w hen the first person to successfully complete the program was presented with a certificate o f graduation. The person had two criminal charges dismissed. Wellbriety focuses on the importance o f responsible decision-making skills, and works toward helping one achieve a substance free lifestyle. The Tribal Court is seeing more people enroll in the Wellbriety program, helping themselves toward sobriety, said Floyd Calica, tribal public defender. Native film at Madras COCC T he Madras cam pus o f the Central Oregon Commu nity College will show the film The Cherokee Word for Water on Monday, February 22, from 3-5 p.m. This is a feature length motion picture that tells the story o f the w ork that led Wilma Mankiller to become the first modern female Chief o f th e C herokee N atio n .
