Wellbriety Celebrating Families! now in W.S.
W ellbriety is a grow ing
movement in Indian Coun
try. This is the grassroots
movement o f White Bison,
based in Colorado, with part
ners in many Indian commu
nities.
W hite
B ison
and
Wellbriety provide culturally
based healing— from addic
tio n , abuse, and o th e r
trauma— to the next seven
generations o f Indigenous
people.
O n the W arm Springs
Reservation, the Wellbriety
Sons and Daughters o f Tra
dition program led to cre
ation o f the Soaring Butter
flies and Warrior Spirits stu
dent and youth programs.
The Warm Springs Tribal
Court has a Wellbriety alter
native to criminal court (story
at right). And last year Com
munity Counseling formed
the adult groups G uiding
Butterflies and Mighty War
riors.
Sarah Wolfe at the Coun
seling Center has been an
adv o cate o f the local
Wellbriety movement. Re
cently, she saw the opportu
nity to bring Wellbriety train
ing to the reservation.
The three-day training,
held last week, now allows
Community Counseling to
host an eight-week Wellbriety
Celebrating Families! p ro
gram.
Twenty-nine people took
p a rt in the training. T he
group used the conference
room at Fire Management,
as it provided the needed
space.
The training— the first o f
its kind in Warm Springs—
was paid for through a grant.
“D on Coyhis (White Bi
son fo u n d er) asked if I
wanted to get this started in
Warm Springs,” Sarah says.
