The new students joined the program after the two- w eek o rie n ta tio n , called ‘Mental Toughness.’ , During Mental Toughness, the young people learn the basics about H eart o f O r egon YouthBuild, said Butch David, school liaison. “And they bond as a group through team building, ser vice projects and trainings,” he said. M ost o f the young people com e from W arm Springs and M adras,' as w ell as Prineville and Bend. All o f the students will be w orking on diplom as and G ED s while building afford able homes in Madras. This is through a partner ship with Housing Works to — ------ Courtesy Butch David. With this hew group, Heart o f Oregon YouthBuild is now 42 students strong with an other group starting April 11. YouthBuild is a 12-month p ro g ra m , o p en to y o u n g people ages 16 to 24. The program is ideal for students who may be behind in credits, but who are deter mined to graduate. There is an in-classroom com ponent to the program, as well as out o f the class room work. T he Y outhBuild experi ence o u t th e classro o m teaches job skills. And the stu dents make employment Con tacts that can to job opportu nities. Y outhBuild has w orked with the Confederated Tribes for the past few years, and recently began a renew ed partnership. A public meeting is coming up this evening, Wednesday, Feb. 17, on a p ro b le m ro ad s project assessrhent. The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Agency Longhouse. The topic of discus sion is th e P ro b lem Roads Project Assess m e n t fo r th e U pper W arm Springs drain age. Com m unity W ellness C e n te r w ill host, a co rnhusk class with Kelli Palmer.
