Marlanea and husband James were renting a space in down town Redmond, where they had a successful business selling high quality beauty projects. A fter a couple o f years, they w anted to buy the space, re model, and expand with a hair and nail salon. But the sale didn’t happen, which turned o ut to be a good thing. “The space right next door came on the market,” Marlanea was saying recently. “The stars aligned, and we w ent for it.” James spent the next eight months on the remodeling work, and they opened Waunanuba last fall. Working at the salon now are- Marlanea and Jam es, and hairstylists C helsea M anion, Sheena Stevens and Kristy Tay lor. Marlanea, her cousin Chelsea, and Sheena are tribal members. All four o f the hairdressers are g ra d u a te s o i M adras H ig h School.' Me WAUNANUBA on 8 This spring will be a busy elec tio n tim e fo r the C on fed erated Tribes. There will be at least two, and possibly three, elections on ba sic tribal matters. The m em bership will elect the Twenty-Seventh Tribal Council, and .meanwhile will determine whether to amend the tribal Constitution. Because o f the timing of these, two elections, the membership could see a third election. This would hap pen under the following scenario: . The membership Would elect a new Tribal Council, based on the current C onstitution. This vote would be based on the district’ nomi nation process, currently scheduled- - for later this month. Specifically, the district Council nomination meetings are at present set as follows: , T he Simnasho District, Monday, February 22; the Agency District, T uesday, F eb ru ary 23; and the Seekseequa district, Wednesday, Feb ruary 24. Vcc ELECTIONS on 8 Eagle Watch to celebrate 21st anniversary The Twenty-First Annual Eagle Watch celebration is coming up Sat urday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28 at the at Round Butte O verlook Park. T he free celebration h o n o rs eagles and other raptors that live in the Lake Billy Chinook area, The Confederated Tribes have been co-host o f the event since its" beginning 21 years ago. The tribes h o st Eagle W atch w ith P ortland General Electric, and Oregon Parks and Recreation. The tWo-day celebration runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28. The Q uartz Creek D rum m ers and Dancers will provide a special presentation, sponsored by Warm Springs Power and Water E n ter prises, at 2 p.m. on Sunday. O ther festivities will fie the Eagle < Village at Round Butte O verlook Park's visitor center, 10 miles west o f Madras. A ttendees can m eet Aquila, a rehabilitated golden eagle, as well as a great horned owl. Children are invited to build a bluebird house (on Saturday) or a bird feeder (on Sun day) and make a commemorative Eagle Watch button to take home.
