I am pleased to share with you my first Tribal Chairman monthly update. The purpose o f these up dates is to keep tribal mem bers better informed o f the w ork o f the Twenty-Sixth Tribal Council. T h ese u p d ates w ill be p rin te d in th e Spilyay Tym oo—if you are a tribal member and not receiving the new spaper, please contact them and provide an updated address; or you can read the newspaper online: k w s o .o r g / n e w s - i n f o / spilyay-tymoo/ Since the beginning o f the Twenty-Sixth Tribal Council, we have stayed on top o f our minutes, with our staff dedi cated to this effort. We have approved m in utes since the start o f our term in May 2013 through June 2014. These minutes are im portant records o f discus sions and decisions made by the Tribal Council, and the minutes are available to tribal members to view at the Tribal Council office. T hese are printed, shared over the air, and avail able online: kw so.org/governm ent/ In the past few m onths, there has been a lot o f atten tion on our financial well-be ing from outside and ill-in formed media sources. As a resu lt o f th is bad press, our staff has had to focus significant time and en ergy to address concerns o f federal agencies and o ther granting institutions; As I shared in my recent letter, our Nation undergoes an annual organization-wide audit as well as an annual au dit on federal funds received. These audits have continu ally found that our financial processes are strong and we are in compliance with grant ing requirements. While this has been time- consuming, it has also p ro vided an opportunity for the T ribe to d em o n strate o u r strong internal fiscal policies. This includes im portant steps the W SFPI mill m ust undertake, including staff re duction from 104 to 85; re v ising th e m ill’s b u sin ess model, and seeking funds to -support the development o f small log mill. W SFPI will continue to pay tim b er stum page pay ments owed over a 36-month repayment schedule. .The Confederated Tribes o f W arm Springs closed a lo n g -te rm lo an w ith th e U SD A in th e am o u n t o f $6,353,101. This contributes to the Tribe’s portion o f costs associated with the building o f the K-8 Academy. The Academy was built as a joint project between Warm Springs and the Jefferso n County School District, each agreeing to cover h alf the costs. ATNI C onference O u r com m unity will be hosting the Affiliated Tribes pating in these meetings as well as more frequent G en eral Council meetings, where elected officials and member ship can devote time to spe cific issues. In closing, I encourage you to engage positively in our political processes by attend ing district and General Coun cil meetings, asking questions, and making proactive contri butions to the discussions. A 10 a.m. Walk ing Break on Campus starts at the Diabetes Prevention Office. The Jefferson County Li brary Film Center will show Birdman, rated R, at the Rodriguez Annex in Madras on Friday at 7:30. Films are free and refreshments are available. There is a grade check today at the Warm Springs K-8 Academy for student track athletes. To partici pate you must have a 2.0 or higher GPA, and be pass ing 6 of 7 classes. These include the carbon seq u estratio n p ro ject, the Tribal E m ploym ent Rights Ordinance (TERO), and the U n m an n ed A rial V ehicles (UAV). prise revenues and the reces sion on our membership and our services.
