His wife donated seed to get some vegetables going. The garden wasn’t ready un til July, once a fence was in stalled, paid for with program funds. Carol is proud to say that the garden is organic, and that kids in Summer Recreation helped tend the plants, weed ing and watering them. The reward was a radish to eat. A t the garden there are planters with some flowers near the gate. More boxes are lined out in the empty space, with plans for expansion. Carol hopes the exposure to gardening for her Commu nity C enter kids will teach th e m som e b asics a b o u t growing their own food. “Maybe if kids see how we can plant and care for fruit and vegetables here at the Recreation Program, they will want to plant a garden at their home too,’’ Carol says. Johnson pleaded guilty to arson in connection with the 2013 Sunnyside Fire on the reservation. The fire cost millions to contain, and cost K ah- Nee-Ta hundreds o f thou sands o f dollars in lost revenue. Johnson was arrested after a Facebook posting saying, “Like my fire?” She said she started the fire to give her fire-fighter friends work. She was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Port- Sadle Renee Johnson land. D u rin g the hearing Jo h n so n said she suffered from alcohol and drug issues. She prom ised the judge that she would turn her life around. Judge Marco Hernandez also ordered Johnson to per form 200 hours o f commu nity service in the fire-dam- Pgge 5 September 17, 2014- aged area. In h e r earlier plea, Johnson said she had been riding in a car in July 2013. She lit a small firework and th rew it o u t the. window, where it ignited brush, court records say. The fire spread to about 80 sq u are m iles, c o stin g nearly $8 million to put out. J o h n s o n said was s u r prised the fire grew to the size it did. “Time cannot be reversed nor choices taken back once made,” Johnson Said in her statement. “I will n ot be mak ing this mistake twice.” In the courtroom during the sentencing were about 10 members o f her family. P ro secu to rs and d e fense attorneys agreed to a recom m endation th at Johnson spend 18 months in prison, followed by 180 days o f alcohol and drug treatment. The maximum sentence was five years in prison, plus a $250,000 fine. Hernandez said he was taking Johnson’s previous struggles with alcohol into account when sentencing her. H e noted that she had been in substance abuse in-patient programs four tim es, th e m o st recen t time this. year. Ceded Lands hunting tags Confederated Tribes o f Warm Springs Ceded Lands hunting tags are now available for pronghorn antelope, black bear and cougar. The tags are available at the N atural Resources front office. There will be four Bighorn Sheep tags available this year on ceded lands. Bighorn tags are on a lottery system. You can sign up at the N atural Resources office. The drawing for big horn tags will be on Friday, September 20 at noon. Cobell payments in the mail A federal judge has ap p ro v ed the final paym ent from the $3.4 billion Cobell trust fund settlement. The judge in the case last week issued an order to distribute the long-awaited T rust A d ministration Class payment. The firm appointed by the court to administer the settle m ent will mail checks to hun dreds o f thousands o f Indian beneficiaries who have been w aiting for the m oney for nearly two years. The first checks were ex pected to be in the mail this past Monday, Sept. 15. T he paym ents will total nearly $941.6 million. Each member o f the class will re ceive a b ase p a y m e n t o f $869. But many m em bers will receive more, based on the level o f activity in his or her In d iv id u a l In d ia n M oney (IIM) account.
