Spilyay T ym o o , W arm Springs, O regon Page 12 M ay 14-, 2014- Schools project focuses on tribal histories, sovereignty C/ass of 2014 The Oregon Indian E du cation Association and Lewis & C lark College have re ceived funding to support the Oregon Tribal Histories and Sovereignty Curriculum D e sign Project. The project will develop a state-w ide Indian histories and sovereignty curricula aligned to Oregon curriculum standards comm on core stan dards. Funding comes from th e Bill & M elinda G ates Foundation, and the Meyer Memorial Trust. The Indian Education As sociation (OIEA) and Lewis & Clark plan to hold a series of three regionally based sum mits and three working group m eetings in order to draft ed u c a tio n a l c o n te n t fo r fourth-, eighth- and tenth- grade curriculum units that will guide the w riting and com pletion o f the curricu lum. Growing up Viola lived on the reser vation and at the Columbia R iver, w h ere she learn ed from her grandm other Susan Palmer, Indian name Youdel. That name is now the Indian name o f Viola’s granddaugh ter Brigette Scott. F ro m h er g ran d m o th er Viola learned the Wasco lan guage, and traditional bas ketry skills such as cedar and willow basketry. Growing up at the Columbia she helped w ith the fishing, and dried and canned the salmon. Later as a young woman, Viola attended technical col lege in Corvallis, at w hat is now Oregon State University. She studied for a year at the U niversity o f Illinois. She lived for a year at Yakama, but has spent m ost o f her adult life on the reservation. She and her husband Nick were ranchers. They raised cows and horses. After her husband’s passing, the work was too m uch for one per son, so she sold the ranch but still has some horses. Viola is the third eldest tribal member. A t H onor Se niors Day last week, she was named the Warm Springs Se nior o f the Year. She received a Pendleton blanket from the S en io r P ro g ra m , an d a putlapa from N oree’s Plume. Viola’s brothers are atwai C h ie f N e lso n , Felix and Merris Wallulatum. She had one sister, V eronica Wannassay. All three o f her brothers were in the service, two in the Navy and one in the Army. Viola has 13 grand chil dren, 25 great grandchildren, and four great-great grand children. H er Indian name A- tumani. Viola served six terms on th e C u ltu re an d H eritag e Committee, and was active in the Language program with atwai Gladys Thom pson and Madeline M clnturff. She is an Agency Longhouse elder, and keeps active by gather ing roots and other traditional foods, and beading. With her ninety-third birthday coming up V iola still gets aro u n d pretty good, driving herself when she needs to go some where.
