What many people don’t know is that it w asn o t the first A m erican flag ra ise d in th a t epic World War II battle. In a file photo U.S. Marines o f the 28th Regiment o f the Fifth Division raise the American fla g atop Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, on Feb. 23,1945. T w o A merican Indi ans played big parts in both flag- raisings on Iwo J im a ’s M ount Suribachi. Louis Charles Charlo, from the Bitter root Sahsh Tribe o f M o n tan a, helped with the. first flag.
