Search and rescue, commer cial delivery, agriculture ap plications, and fire suppres sion are am ong the m any potential uses. UAV technology will likely becom e an integral part o f life over the next decade, Anspach said. This would be similar to the grow th that happened in the global posi tioning system (GPS) tech nology. G PS technology began with the military, but now is a com m on part o f life. GPS systems are found in m otor vehicles' and smart phones, for instance. T he U.S. was a leader in drone technology, but other countries are now overtaking the U.S. Part o f this situation has to do with the strict control over air space in the U.S. The UAVs could pose a haz ard to regular aircraft, so FAA restricts their presence in the general air space. Research, testing and de v e lo p m e n t are n e e d e d to make the UAVs safe for use in the general air space. For instance, the UAVs will need technology that detects regu lar air craft and avoids them, Anspach said. T h e UAV in d u stry also wants testing in order to de velop vehicles that can oper a te safely w ithout crashing. The vehicles will contain ex pensive cam eras and other com puter equipm ent in the nose area; so keeping them intact is important. In Oregon, the approved te s t sites are th e W arm S prings R e se rv a tio n , T illam ook and P endleton. T he W arm Springs Reserva tion has the benefit o f being g e o g rap h ica lly d iv erse, Anspach said. A nother benefit o f testing on the reservation is the rela tively open air space. “I think we had the best application,” he said. The FAA took 10 m onths in processing 25 test-site pro posals, last week announcing the final six, including the Alaska, O regon, Hawaii re gion, which includes the res ervation site. W ith the FAA approval, the tribes can how begin c o -' ordinating the testing w ork with the University o f Alaska, and the o ther O regon test sites. ‘W e’ll probably start work ing on range preparation in February or March,” Anspach said. Once the ranges are estab lished, the testing can begin fairly soon. The testing facili ties will be highly mobile, in volving mainly a truck and monitoring computer systems.
