Spilyay T yrooo, W grrn Springs, O regon December 24, 2013 Pqge 3 Busy time at the Christmas Bazaar The Warm Springs Recre ation D epartm ent was very pleased w ith the results o f the T h irty -E ig h th A nnual Christmas Bazaar. “We had over 70 v e n dors,” said Carol Sahme, Rec reation coordinator. The ba zaar attracted many hundreds o f visitors who browsed the m any unique hand-crafted items. “And the food was excel lent;” Carol said. “We had people stopping by the office to say how much they enjoy this bazaar.” Recreation posted signs by the highway advertising the bazaar, so traffic came in off th e highway. R ecreatio n w ishes to th an k all o f its friends and the supporters o f the bazaar, which helps to fu n d the R ecreation p r o grams. The department is in need Over $6,000 in cultural grants awarded through Washanaksha program T h e C o n fe d e ra te d Tribes o f Warm Springs W ashanaksha C u ltu ral C om m ittee has selected th e recip ien ts o f th eir 2014 grants: T h e W ashanaksha awards go to tribal mem bers for projects that pro m ote u n derstanding o f and involvement in cul tural activities, that pass on tribal know ledge to youth, that support artists and traditional teachers or that preserve, practice and teach tribal language. The Warm Springs Cul ture and Heritage D epart ment will be offering six workshops for 11-15 year old young men that focus on traditional male roles: Suzie Slockish will im p ro v e th e te a c h in g o f Ichishkin, and the docu menting traditional prac tices. Emily Yazzie will teach y oung p e o p le how to m ake item s needed for traditional practices. G erald D anzuka will o ffe r sessions to m ale youth on tribal history, leadership, tribal Language and historical dances. Projects can begin in January 2014, and need to be co m p leted by July.
