Billey, a so p h o m o re at M adras H igh School, will compete in the Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas on Nov. 5-9. H e will be riding in the Junior Bull Riding event, rep resenting the Western States Rodeo Association and the C o n fe d e ra te d T rib es o f Warm Springs. B illey is th e W arm Springs Indian Rodeo Asso ciation year-end champion. H e traveled.this sum m er to rodeos in M ontana, Idaho, C a lifo rn ia , N e v a d a a n d O regon, earning points for the Indian N ational Einals Rodeo. Benjamin’s m ost m em o rable rodeo was the Crow Fair, w here his U ncle Lee entered him in the rookie bronc-riding com petition. There will be a 10k and a 2-mile fun run or walk. P reregistration is being accepted at the com m u nity center office now. Day o f the Race Reg istration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and races at 10. Cowdeo marks 45th year T he Forty-Fifth Annual Cowdeo will happen at the J e ffe rs o n C o u n ty F a ir grounds on Saturday, Oct. 19. Perform ances will be at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. All kids ages 5 thru 14 are invited to participate in goat decorating, h o rseless c a lf ro p in g , breakaway calf roping, sheep riding, cow riding, barrel rac ing, and calf riding. Hunting season update from Natural Resources Please come by the N atu ral Resources office to pick up your tags, a state lands 2013 Big Game Regulations Guide and to sign up for lot tery hunts. Tags will be issued bn a first come first serve basis. You may pick up your tag up to two days before the Start o f the hunt. D ue to the 2013 cost con tainment directive, the N atu ral Resources office will be closed Friday, O ct. 25 and Friday, islov. 8 for reduced work hours. H unting information is now available on the fish ing and hunting hotline avail able at 541-553-2000. Ceded Land H unting is designated for off-reserva- tion public (unclaimed) lands; private land hunting access m ust be approved by land- owners. Illegally harvesting wildlife on the reservation using ceded land tags or har vesting the w rong sex can have great long-term impacts to the tribes’ wildlife popula tions. Overharvest and ille gally harvesting females re duces w ildlife p o p u latio n numbers for multiple genera tions. The Warm Springs Wildlife Department Court upholds killing sea lions to save salmon (AP) — An appeals court has upheld killing sea lions that eat too many salmon at Bonneville D am on the Co lumbia River. T h e 9 th U.S. C ircu it C ourt o f Appeals had told NOAA Fisheries Service it needed to do a better job o f explaining why it was autho rizing the killing o f dozens o f sea lions, which are pro tected by the Marine Mam mal Protection Act. And on Friday th e c o u rt affirm ed th at th e latest explanation filled the bill. The court said the service examined the relevant data, and explained the rationale behind killing up to 92 sea li ons a year to reduce the loss o f th re a te n e d and e n d an gered salmon.
