(AP) — A Blackfeet tribal member has been released on $500 bail after spending five days in jail over Facebook postings criti cal o f the tribe’s governing council, an arrest the tribe’s chairman said was necessary to protect the council mem bers. Bryon Farm er’s postings on the Blackfeet Against Cor ruption Facebook page have been sharp in their criticism o f the Blackfeet Tribal Busi ness Council. Since last year, five council m em bers have been suspended or removed in intra-tribal disputes, leav ing a partially vacant body to rule under an emergency de clared by C hairm an Willie Sharp Jr. Critics such as Farm er say Sharp and his allies are rul ing by fiat, and there is no emergency. Some o f the sus p ended council m em bers have asked for Bureau o f Indian Affairs to intervene in what they call a constitu tional crisis, with no results. Farm er was arrested ear lier this month, a day before he said he planned to unveil a float at N orth American In d ia n D ays th a t w o u ld show the Blackfeet people w on’t tolerate corrupt lead ers. F a rm er lives in G re a t Falls, but was arrested while attending a family gathering in B row ning. H e was charged w ith v io la tin g a tribal ordinance outlawing statements m eant to harm, discredit or expose a coun cil m ember to hatred, ridicule or contempt. T rib a l p r o s e c u to r C arl Pepion cited the Facebook postings in a June 28 court document charging him with violating the Blackfeet ordi nance and signed a warrant for his arrest.
