The market will be on Fridays at the campus park. Commercial fishery for chinook, sockeye T h e W arm - S p rin g s,’ Y akam a, N ez P erce and Umatilla tribes began com mercial sales from their sum mer fishery last week. This is the first significant commercial fishery o f 2013. Pre-season forecasts estimate 73,500 summer chinook and J 80,500 sockeye. D epending on the actual run sizes, Indian fishers may h a rv e s t ap p ro x im ately 20,000 summer chinook and ;12,000 sockeye, m o s t o f which will be sold commer cially. Both treaty and non-treaty fishery catches will be ad justed throughout the season as the run size is updated. The tribal fishery is pro tected under 1855 treaties with the federal government, w here the W arm Springs, Yakama N atio n , U m atilla, and N ez P erce trib es re served the right to fish at all usual and accustomed fish ing places in the Columbia River Basin— a treaty right th a t reserves cerem onial, subsistence, and commercial uses. T he in creased sockeye re tu rn s to th e O kanagan River are the direct result o f sockeye enhancem ent p ro grams currently underway by the Okanagan N ation Alli ance, a group o f First N a tions tribes in British Colum bia The tribal fishery offers an ample supply o f fish di- rect-to-publlc sales. Common sales locations include: Marine Park in Cascade L ocks, L one Pine in T h e D alles, N o rth B onneville (one mile east o f Bonneville Dam), and Columbia Point in the Tri-Cities area. •So pack a cooler with ice and keep the following tips in mind: Sales from Indian fishers generally run from 10 am to dusk. Price is determined at the point o f sale. Most sales are cash only. Buyers should request a receipt. Indian fishers can advise o n to p ics in c lu d in g fish freshness and preparation. P o w er house No. 1) in a straight line through the western tip o f Pierce Island, to a dead line marker on the Washing ton bank at Beacon Rock up the river to a point 600 feet below the Bonneville Dam, but excluding the following four areas: (1) between markers lo cated 150 feet upstream and 450 feet downstream from the m outh o f Tanner Creek out to the center o f the Co lumbia River, during the pe riod August 16 to O ctober 15; (2) Inside the south navi gation lock at the Bonneville D am from a marker on the western-most point o f Rob ins Island to a marker on the Oregon mainland shore; (3) From Bradford Island below Bonneville Dam from the south shore between the dam and a line perpendicu lar to the shoreline marker at w est end o f riprap and from north shore between fishway entrance and a line perpendicular to the shore line marker 850 feet down stream; and (4) From Robins Island b elo w B o n n ev ille. Retention o f any stur geon that may be caught in cidentally while fishing for salmon or steelhead within the prescribed area shall be prohibited. Incidental catch o f species other than stur geon is allowed. 15.
