ArouncJ Indian C ou ntry Congresswoman opposes casino near Spokane (AP) — A congresswoman has joined opponents o f a proposed Indian casino near Fairchild Air Force Base out side Spokane, saying such a large, commercial develop m ent might prom pt the mili tary to close the base in the future. U.S. Rep. C athy M cM orris Rodgers, a R e publican who represents the Spokane area, said in a let ter to the Bureau o f Indian Affairs that the casino posed a risk to retaining Spokane County's largest employer. “The proposed site, due to its location relative to Fairchild Air Force Base’s long-standing flight patterns, p resents a clear th reat to current and future missions o f F airch ild ,” M cM orris Rodgers wrote in the recent letter. T he Spokane Tribe has proposed the major casino and hotel complex just a few blocks from the base and is awaiting approval from the fed eral g o v e rn m e n t and from Gov. Jay Inslee to p ro ceed. The tribe contends the developm ent w o n 't im pair operations at Fairchild now or in the future. Funding was also included to continue construction o f a h e alth care facility in Kayenta, Ariz., and to com p lete c o n s tru c tio n o f a health care facility in San Carlos, Ariz., and the South ern C alifornia Y outh Re gional Treatment Center near Hemet, Calif. I f the proposed budget is enacted, the IHS discretion ary b u d g e t w ill have in creased 32 percent since fis cal year 2008.
