The condors are at zoo’s Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation, part o f a re covery program for the en dangered birds. The condors are a species o f cultural im portance to Wasco heritage. T he O regon Z o o p ro gram was a favorite project o f atw ai W asco C h ief N elso n W allu latu m ,'w h o named the first condor chick born at the zoo about a de cade ago. He named the bird Kun- w ak -sh u n . T h e z o o a n nounced last week that Kun- wak-shun, released nine years ago in California, has paired with a wild-fledged female. Recent hatchlings Three o f the condors at the zoo, Malibu, Ojai and Squapuni, each laid one egg during February. “Each new egg is critical to th e California condor’s co m eb a ck ,” said K elli Walker, the zoo’s lead con dor keeper. F ertile eggs are placed in an incubator to pre vent any potential damage, and the condor parents will sit on dum m y eggs u n til hatching begins, usually in 54 to 58 days. . A t that time, Walker will switche the real eggs back, so that the chicks can hatch un der their parents. The conser vation center should see its first chick o f the season in early April. Walker said the first con dor eggs came a little later than usual this year— they typically arrive in early Feb ruary. She monitors the birds via closed-circuit cameras in their nest-boxes, and had seen signs that the eggs were com ing... “ Usually, a b ird th a t’s ab o u t to lay an egg w on’t leave the nest room fpr about 24 h o u rs b e fo re h a n d ,” Walker said. “She’ll spend a lot o f time in the corner, and she’ll start to look pretty un comfortable right before she laysjt.” Once an egg has been laid, Walker removes it at the first opportunity, quickly weighing it and making sure the shell is in good condition before replacing it in the nest box. Malibu’s egg weighed just shy o f 11 ounces and looked to be in fine shape, Walker said. She planned to check Ojai’s and Squapuni’s eggs today.. Walker expects three or four m ore eggs will be laid this year. Kun-wak-shun Kun-wak-shun hsa paired with a wild-fledged female in C alifornia’s Pinnacles N a tional M onum ent, and the two are now taking turns sit ting on her egg. Kun-wak-shun hatched at the Jonsson Center in 2004 and took to the open skies in 2005, joining other wild con dor residents in the 26,000- acre national park. O n three occasions since, he has been removed to the Los Angeles Zoo for chela tion therapy to remove lead from his system. Accumulated lead poison ing— a problem that plagues all raptors and scavengers— is the m ost severe obstacle to the California condor’s recov ery as a species. As the birds feed on carrion and o th er animal carcasses, they can unintentionally ingest lqad from bullet fragments. Lead consumption causes paralysis o f the digestive tract and re sults in a slow death by star vation. Lead also causes severe neurological problems, so the birds not only starve but suf fer fro m im p aired m o to r functions. The California condor is classified as a critically endan gered species. In 1982, only 22 individuals remained in the wild. With the help o f breed ing programs like the Oregon Z oo’s, condor numbers now total around 400, counting those in breeding programs and in the wild. M ore th a n 30 h ealth y chicks have hatched at the Jo n sso n C en ter since th e program began in 2003, and 23 O regon,Zoo-reared birds have gone out to field pens, w ith m o st released to the wild. (AP) — Researchers re leased 50,000 salmon into a flooded rice field in the Sacramento Valley in an e f f o rt to u n d e rsta n d w h e th e r su ch fields, flooded between harvests, cam stand in for the wet lands that once filled the area and served as a mas sive nursery for juvenile salmon. The fish were released into a 20-acre rice field north o f Woodland by re searchers from University o f California, Davis, the California D epartment o f W ater R esources and a nonprofit group. The fish were released in an area known as the Yolo Bypass, which was created to divert floodwa te rs fro m S acrarnento, W hen it floods, insects thrive in the area, provid ing a good food source for growing salmon. , Biologist Jacob Katz o f Cal Trout, the nonprofit in volved in the effort, said it is a large lab experiment.
