Spilyay T ym o o , W arm Springs, O regon February 6, 2013 Letters Page 5 Feedback sought on local health services The Joint Health Commis sion released the 2011 report to the community, -entitled the Annual Report: State of our Health and Our Health Deliv ery Systems. “To the credit o f our dis tinguished tribal nation, a phe nomenal community-wide ef fort to improve our health is u n d er way,” said H e a th e r Crow-Martinez, Joint Health Commissioner. “This g ra n t w o rk -in - p ro g ress is to b e c o m mended— so many families and individual are carin g a b o u t an d m ak in g g reat strides to w ard im p ro v e d physical health, mental health, and spiritual health.” She added,' “N um erous tribal departments, programs, committees, the Commission, and Indian H ealth Service have stepped up to be part o f this outstanding endeav our o f im p ro v ed and im proved systems o f care, “Programs are aligning and Collaborating, data is being Equine program E ’T o o k tee K a dooge, G ood Day my people, I want to take this time to express my appreciation for the sup port I received at the He He Youth Prevention Camp July 11, 2011 to July 15, 2011!, Forgive m e for the late sub mission. Dove you, lsley, from grandma and grandpa Marella and Robert Sam Sr. The nine-week “Lighten Up for the Holidays” cam paign kicked off in late O c tober and ended in early Janu ary. The campaign consisted o f weekly weigh-ins, physical activity and nutrition support. The goal was to lose or maintain weight during the holidays. Registered partici pants receive a fleece jacket, and those who lost the most weight received a travel fit ness kit. The winners for the campaign are: 'M en’s division: A llan Smith, and Frank Smith. W omen’s division: Misty S to h eb rak er, V anessa Walker-Stwyer, and Margie Tuckta. The , fun run at the start o f January consisted o f three laps on campus. Times were reco rd ed and prizes w ere given to the fastest time for male, female and youth. The winners were: Male: Attcity Begay (won a George Foreman grill). p ro v e m e n ts to o u r local health services. The report was also posted on Facebook by the Warm Springs Prevent tion Unit. Please note that the community report is target-, ing Warm Springs tribal mem bers, and n o t ihtended for outside agencies. Community members are also asked to let the commis sion know where community meetings should be held, in cluding home based meetings. The report has a Personal Health Worksheet for com munity members to fill out, and post. O ne high school student said reaching her health goal will require “no eating out, m ore fruit and vegetables) w orkout schedule, try new activities, do m ore [public] speaking, keep active, buy groceries and have a puppy to play with and take to the park.” (Note: Also find the form at the bottom right o f this page.) collected and utilized in de veloping reasonable and ef fective health strategies. Most importantly, however, com munity members are seeing the benefits and taking deci-, sive action toward their health and the health o f their fam ily.” When asked to comment, as a young person Jeremiah Johnson said, “The report is encouraging, even the nega tive statistics are shown in a positive light. We are going in the right direction with this.
