T he final phase o f the seven-site project will be at Celilo Park, across the high way from Celilo Village. T he design o f the Celilo P a rk e le m e n t o f th e Confluence Project will in clude an arc walkway at the edge o f the Columbia River, inspired by traditional fishing planks. T h e arc w ill pass above the area where the falls were located. T he design artist is Maya Lin, w ho has worked on the other parts o f the Confluence P ro je c t, su ch as th o se at Sacajaw ea State P ark near P asco , W ash., an d at th e Sandy River Delta. Lin is an architectural de signer and artist know n for h er w ork in sculpture and la n d s c a p e a rt. H e r b e st- known work is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Wash ington, D.C. Tribal Council this week h e a rd an u p d a te o n th e Confluence Project from Aili Schreiner, project director, and website coordinator Leslie Miller. Schreiner and Miller said they would like to m eet w ith any tribal elders w ho have memories o f Celilo Falls. They are also looking for old photographs o f the falls. T his m eetin g will be a chance to discuss the Im pact Aid application for financial year 2014, and other matters relating to Im pact Aid. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10 in th e lib ra ry o f th e W arm Springs E lem entary School. T he district annually af- fords its patrons, specifically Native American parents and guardians, the opportunity to offer c om m ents.and make recom mendations relative to the application for and the use o f Im pact Aid funds. P a rt o f the Celilo P ark project will include an inter active web-based element in cluding recorded m em ories o f the park. T he audio and video recordings w ould be available at the w ebsite. A web application would allow visitors to hear the stories as they walk through park. To assist with the project, “I w ould encourage elders who have memories o f Celilo Falls to share their stories,” said Tribal Councilman Ron Suppah. T he features at Celilo Park w ill also in c lu d e sites equipped with viewing devices similar to the coin-operated binoculars featured at other parks. Instead o f binoculars, though, the devices at Celilo will show film fo o tag e o f Celilo Falls. A nother example: T here w ill be a ro c k e n c lo su re w here you en te r and then hear the recorded sound o f the falls. T he overall idea is to give an impression o f what it was like at Celilo Falls be fore the inundation.
