The Journey is to Squaxim Island on the Olympic Pen insula, hom e o f the tribal community o f Kamilche. T he Warm Springs canoe and family left on July 12, and return in early August. T he landing at Squaxim Island is set for Sunday, July 29. This will be followed by Potlatch on the Squaxim Is land Reservation, July 29-Au- gust 5. S atu rd ay , Ju ly Howlak Tichum N orman A llen N athan N orm an Allen N athan was born August 8, 1937 in Parker, Ariz., to Hazel Scott N athan Seyler and Donald O. N athan, join in g his o ld e r b ro th e r Charles Nathan. The fam ily then returned to O r egon w here the parents worked in the shipyards in Portland. By the time N orm an was 12 he was w orking in the, w oods like a grow n man. H e would work all su m m er, saving his m oney, th en re n te d an apartment in Madras and w ent to school like any norm al child. H e had af ter-school jobs such as stocking shelves in Earl’s M arket. H e w as b e frie n d e d by th e B abe M oore family. H e worked in the block-m aking busi- ness at n ig h t, w en t to school during the day like m o s t te e n a g e rs. T h e Moores soon took N orm in to th e ir lives an d th e ir home. A fte r g ra d u a tin g fro m Madras High School, N orm entered the U.S. Navy. This was the start o f another life. H e served honorably and at tained the rank o f A ppren tice Chief Petty Officer. He played football for the N orth Island Skyraiders, was ABC officer aboard his ship and truly “saw the world.” U pon leaving the service N o rm returned to Arizona as a “Native Sun” to enroll at the University o f Arizona. He received a football scholar ship as well as an academic scholarship. H e received his d eg ree a n d m o v ed o n to U CLA to study co m p u ter analysis. N o rm m arried and had two children while becoming active in the movie industry. H e had played bit parts while in O regon but was privileged to m e e t Jay S ilv erh eels (Tonto) and the two o f them D a n ic a G reene is the cu sto m er service m a n co-founded the Los Angeles Indian A ctor Workshop. He was active in the LA In ter city Cultural Center Stage Pre sentations. < He' had parts in movies: Paw nee in L ittle Big Man, McMasters in H ouse Made o f D aw n (this w ent to the Cannes Film Festival), and as Leb in O nce Again in Love. H e had parts in television too: K odiac, D ance on the B urning G rass and Hawaii Five-0. H e m ade stage ap pearance in Eagle Boy as well as various productions as an ex tra sin ce 1953. D u rin g these years it became im por tant for all actors to join the Screen Actors Guild. N orm held m em bership and was proud to still carry his SAG card. N orm an had many friends N athan, half-sister Susan N a th a n , h a lf -b ro th e r Jam es N ath an ,, g ra n d d au g h ter Sarah E vans, two great grandchildren, uncle Harvey Scott, aunt Alice Scott, many nieces and nephews. He was pre ceded in death by his par e n ts, d a u g h te r K im N ath an E vans and son Scott Allen Nathan. All w ho m et N orm an N ath an recognized him as someone truly special and could never forget his beautiful smile. T- shirts will be given to all par ticipants and everyone who com pletes the 5k w ill get a hot/cold tum bler. The W arm Springs Com munity Counseling Center is looking fo r teep ee poles, enough for five teepees to be set up. T hey are needed for the He-He Butte Prevention Cam p in August.
