Schim m el visits W h ite H ouse for Title IX discussion H er basketball skills took Shoni Schimmel to the Uni versity o f Louisville, where she is a starting guard for the Cardinals. A nd th en last w eek her game took her to the White H ouse. Schim mel was in vited to the White H ouse as' part o f a five-person panel to discuss Title IX, enacted 40 years ago. The official topic o f dis cussion was “Inter-genera tional Views on the Im pact o f Title IX in Athletics.” The panel featured accom plished and notable athletes a'nd advocates for women in sports, including Schimmel, the stand-out guard for the Cardinals. Schimmel is also a favor ite o f Warm Springs, where she has family and many fans. The panelists who visited the W hite H ouse ranged in Courtesy photo. Each spoke to Title IX ’s form ative im p act on th eir lives and offered perspectives and speculations for its future. The panel was moderated by Bonnie Bernstein, ESPN broadcaster and form er All- American gymnast. Joining Schimmel on the panel were Billie Jean King, professional tennis player and fo u n d e r o f th e W om en ■Sports Foundation; A im ee Mullins, athlete-advocate and actress; Tom Perez, assistant A ttorney G eneral for Civil rights, U.S. D ep artm en t o f Justice; and Laurel J. Richie, president o f the WNBA. Schim m el was the only current student-athlete invited to be p art o f the panels. She earned first team honors after leading the Cardinals in scoring, assists, and steals with 14.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Lego Robotics in August Parade Day A w eek-long Lego Robotics camp and the C elebration o f A rt is set for August. The Lego Robotics camp will be held Au gust 13-16, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Education Building training room.
