Leadership Comer New Ways to Learn fl message from Rich lllolitor Superintendent Last week was National Teacher Appreciation week, a time to celebrate our JCSD 509J teachers for the amazing work they do each and every day, all year long. We are so very fortunate to have this group of dedicated professionals who genuinely care about the success and well-being of our students. Our teaching staff has been doing some extraordinary work over the past several years to improve learning and increase our state test scores. Their efforts are clearly having an impact. We see that our students are more engaged and they are improving in all subject areas. On behalf of the district and our school board, I would like to thank our teachers for their dedication and commitment to education in Jefferson County. MHS Summer School It’s not too late to sign up for Summer School. The deadline has been extended to May 18th. Forms are available on the MHS website or in the MHS Student Services office. Mary Hawes works with a student in the computer lab. Students at the MHS Alternative School program are thriving with an online learning program called Stars Suite. The program offers school credits to help students earn a high school diploma. Students work at their own pace, under an individualized plan specific to their learning needs and course requirements. The online program is fully accredited and meets State Core Curriculum standards. It is offered at both the Westside Annex in Madras and at the Annex in Warm Springs. Last year, approximately 30 students graduated from high school with help from Stars Suite. There are currently 65 students enrolled in the program. • “We believe in providing our students with a variety of alternative learning options,” said Gary Carlton, Director of Alternative Programs. “We want them to be successful and comfortable in their learning environment. We’re fortunate to have two great computer labs and dedicated staff to help meet their online learning needs.” Jefferson County School District Outdoor Science Camp Sparks Interest In early May, fourth and fifth graders from Warm Springs Elementary attended an outdoor science camp at the 4-H center in Salem, Oregon. These students are part of the afterschool SMILE (Science &C Math Investigative Learning Experiences) club. SMILE club students from Nyssa, Ontario, Siletz, and Pendleton shared the experience and created opportunities for WSE students to make new friends. Students worked on field studies in the areas of water, animal life, plant life, and geology. All of the students greatly enjoyed evenings at the campfire learning new songs and performing skits. Everyone had a great time, despite the fact it rained nearly the entire time! MHS Transitional Program students enjoy and learn in a community garden at Westside School. Planting Seeds for Independence District students ages 16 through 21 are growing through a “hands on” community garden project at Westside School’s MHS Transitional Program. The garden is part of a larger program that provides students with occupational skill learning and basic education to help them prepare for adulthood and independent living.
